Have any of you ever rode with DOT escorts? I would guess it varies from state to state but here in Pennsylvania the company next door to us sometimes ships very heavy things and those trucks are escorted by a state police car and a state police DOT van. I've also seen this with huge I-beams they were trucking in for the new highway.
Is it nerve wracking riding with police or does it actually help you out having law enforcement working with you to complete your haul?

I have had police escorts before on Heavy, wide, tall loads. The biggest problem is nobody wants to pass all the flashing blue lights. On the interstate PLEASE pass carefully but, pass. Don't hang along side or stay behind blocking traffic because that makes me nervous.
-
What he said^^^^^^^^^ Pass at or just below the speed limit! Sitting next to a truck as you take your time passing just increases your odds of a rock through the windshield or the driver needing to make a move to miss an object in the road or move over to swing wider for a curve. Just because there are cops in front and behind doesn't mean you can't pass. NOW if they come to a place where they do not want you to pass they WILL pull over and block the lanes to keep you behind the truck.

and remember if they are busy with me they can't bother you!

New York State Police escorted radioactive loads across the NY State Thruway. Each officer had his assigned territory. They transferred the box of warning supplies from one police car to another. So, there were more scheduled stops than our driver team would have made without escorts.
The Challenger Thanks this. -
And all the time the meter keeps running. Police escorts get paid by the hour. I have yet to see them get in a hurry for anything.

We were paid miles and hours. The driver in the bunk also got paid by the hour while waiting for the next officer to show up.

I had a Police escort on the campus of Rice University in Houston. The road I needed to deliver on was posted 10'5", I thought because of an overpass or something, but it is because of tree branches. The Police gave me a zigzag course using all the road on both sides to get where I needed to go, and then out again. I would have never been able to do it on my own.

Not this past winter but the one before when they had that real bad freeze
around AR, KY, TN and those states we had police escorts. We were bringing
bunk houses that they use offshore up to AR so the utility crews that were
coming in from all over to get power back had a place to stay.
It was about 40 of us trucks with the houses that were 12' wide. LA state police
escorted us all the way to the AR line. Passing through Lafayette we rolled
through all the lights on the thruway then once on I49 we rolled about 75 trying
to get out there as soon as possible. Once in AR each truck had 2 escorts as
it was nighttime but they wanted them there ASAP. -
I had police escorts while driving bus.
