Engine in the floor is a 1957 283, engine on the stand is for the 55 it’s a 350 bored .040 over. If you don’t find a 400 crank use a 350 and peel some of the cylinders out, won’t gain much but it’ll be a little. Good cam with good heads and carb will do quite a bit to give it some cheerios with good gearing….

I will say I do kinda like the quicker revving engine. The 327 and 4.8L LS have a very similar stroke and I loved how well my old 4.8L pulled above 4,000.

Not an apples to apples comparison but by the seat of the pants dyno my 4.8L felt like it pulled harder higher up than my 5.0L Coyote despite there being about an 80 hp and 80 lb-ft difference. Coyote feels like it pulls harder down lower though.

When I ran old stuff I swore by the Edelbrock 650. Easy to tune and no gaskets below the level of the fuel intake, so no leaks.

Thermoquad’s are a good carbonator. A Rochester Quadrajet can be as good as they come if the throttle plate is in good shape.

Carter AFB’s and Edlelbrock are the same design but Edlelbrock quality took a hit sometime around 20 years ago and they went to ####.

Everyone raves about a Holley but if they ain’t a center squirter I’ll pass.

I bought my 540 Dart out of a mud truck. It’s bored .040 forged crank H beam Carillo rods. I put a set of pop up pistons in it from TRW. A Lunati roller set up with a Victor intake to mount the throttle plate of my injection set up. It’s multi port based and had to drill the intake for the injectors and fuel rail. I was ready to rip that #### out cause myself, RHS in Memphis (sold me the ####) and a couple more couldn’t get my Malibu dial in. It was fat on the bottom and lean on top or other way around no matter what you done. I took it to a guy in Judsonia Arkansas on a Saturday morning…..Saturday afternoon that thing was right. Ol crusty ####### with a stripped down Ford 3 window…. With a 392 Hemi that I feel would hook and book. He shared not only what he done but why. Explained a few things I thought I knew that I didn’t. All in his garage hooked to his house.

I wanted a hot rod not a race car. What I have is somewhere in the dark right in the middle. I still love it but not enough to drive it. But I ain’t outta love enough to let it go. And I #### sure remember enough to know I’ll never ever build another one. The beauty about hot rods is they is no right or wrong. They can be anything a guy wants and still be cool.

I guess if I was to shed the Malibu it’d have be for a 55 or 6 2 door post with a big block.

The 327’s I was around when I was younger were up to 365 horse with a carburetor. A 350 built right will outdo it all day long though. There’s multiple choices you can do with your build, but only you know what you actually want to end up with. I’d say a good 350 setting in a fat fender or square body or even a nova or camaro will make a nice ride…
