I got my start running non hazardous lubricants in the western region(already had been driving for over 3yrs). That turned into more of a local gig running base oil out of the ports of Long Beach and LA. That then turned into Hazardous Chemicals all for the same company, pay wasn’t the greatest but I learned a lot . After that went into running fuel all local for a private union fleet in SoCal, thought I’d retire there but things changed for the worst and I ended up getting into cryo right after and have zero regrets.Friend, scythe08 and viper822004 Thank this.

"Be careful what you ask for -- YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT"

Whether it's a cryo fleet, or fuel -- you will very likely start out with the least desirable shifts (namely: nights, weekends & holidays). And you will likely stay there -- for quite some time.
The safety depts there can be incredibly anal -- for example: I was chided for merely holding a can of soda, while driving (& this was in Florida, during the month of August).
During the interview process -- I specifically asked the interviewer (later, my boss) about eating & drinking while driving to/from customers. I gathered then that a soda can was ok.
For any prospective tanker fleet you may be contemplating -- try to talk with more than one driver who is currently in that fleet -- & preferably out of the same terminal you will later join.
There's no better substitute for reliable, current info -- than from "boots on the ground"....already there.
Be sure to also ask them about driver-facing cameras -- & how they are being used (&/or abused).
Carefully assess what you learn from those already in the trenches.
You may later decide....given all the hassles & the massive levels of oversight -- that it's really just not worth it....& you may thus be happier elsewhere.

To add further insult to injury....
As you may well have already witnessed, personally -- a member of the carrier's safety team "coaches" you -- on a given event, &/or concept.
Said safety official, meanwhile...may have NEVER taken a CDL course -- or ever even been inside the cab of a truck.
Nonetheless -- your carrier of choice has...in their infinite wisdom (wizdumb?) given this person god-like powers over you -- from a safety perspective.
Thus -- you have a situation where (to use an analogy) the person who strings the racquets pretty much telling the tennis pro how to play their game.
Ridiculous? Absolutely.
Reality? It is what it is....

As a general rule -- the larger the carrier -- the more numerous (& silly) their policies/procedures will likely be.
To put it more bluntly: the bigger they are, the dumber they (likely) are.

This is where I thank my lucky stars that our regional safety director is a former Chevron Driver. Gives us things to talk about on our annual ride along!

Yes! All of our safety people are prior drivers too. From regional safety All the way to director.
I still remember at our orientation up in headquarters when a driver spoke up and said that All these rules were made up of people who had never drove a truck before. Should've seen his face when they told him everyone here were prior drivers. AP promotes from within.

Part of me does miss hauling natural gas from plants to rigs in the ND oilfield. If they had similar pay and quailty companies to work for where I live now I'd probably go back to it. But the only cryo/gas guys around me making anywhere close to what I make in fuel are OTR or regional sadly.
