At all too many places, lumpers won't allow drivers do the unloading and feel free to charge exorbitant fees, like they were hospitals.
For example, this lumper fee was $500 (!?!) plus $10 convenience fee. Let's say, I am physically fit and would not mind to do this labor as a physical exercise just as quick for $400 but that's not an option.
The broker will reimburse the fee but why does it have to be the driver/owner operator bothered with the task of supplying the hefty payment, especially at a place where access to do your own labor is not optional?
Besides...it pisses me off to see those often lazy lumpers to charge as much. They're not worth it.

Easy way….tell them u need a copy of their ID as well as social security card for IRS purposes…see what THAT yields you. If they refuse, tell the receiver that you need them

Any time I’ve had to pay a lumper their EIN was on the receipt.

Many places will refuse to give any info, which is against the law. I know one fleet owner who called the IRS and filed a complaint with them over the problem. He wanted to issue a 1099 to each person touching the freight on his truck while charging him, and they threw his truck off the property. So the IRS did investigate, and it wasn't a nice thing for this company.

$600 paid before a 1099 is required, same $600 before a tax number is required.
gentleroger and Siinman Thank this. -
Mostly it’s due to insurance. Receiver got whacked by a hefty settlement, turns it over to 3rd party problem solved.

This is not $600 per event, it is $600 per year. It will be $2000 next year. When you go to the place regularly, it adds up.Siinman Thanks this.

Cool story, just missing the US Marshalls. Have heard the same story for 45 years.Siinman and gentleroger Thank this.

The tax aspect of it is of a second relevance. The carrier almost never pays for it, let IRS worry about the rest.
What is more interesting are those skewed proportions; on an average load that pays $1000 - 400 miles; pick up today, deliver tomorrow - a lumper can make more than the truck that hauls it. At some places, their fees went up 100% since pre covid days.
That'd be OK in the free market spirit in which those lumpers were really hired by a carrier...if that were the case, they'd seldom exceed $50 for 1 hour worth of labor.86scotty Thanks this.
