Does anyone know what's the biggest linear I can iinstall in a F'liner Columbia without having to upgrade the alternator and add batteries? I'm guessing that anything that draws 50 amps of current is borderline. I already fried a computer with RF and got away with it, but it's not something I'd do twice!

I would go no larger than a 5 pill amps such as a Dave Made or Xforce amp. 800 watts and draws 40 amps and be had for under $400.00.

REMEMBER.......It is not power that kills a computer it is a poor ground and poorly shielded coax!!!!! Power does not cause bleed over and it does not cause you to smoke electronics, poor ground and a over modulated radio does.

Ground the hell out of everything and if you think you have it grounded well then do it again. If your cb radio was tuned by a monkey and bleeds all over the band then have it tuned by someone with a clue. Bleed over is not a sign of power,it is a sign of a half ### ed tuned radio and nothing else! And all of the harmonics caused by a over modulated cb radio will cause all kinds of hell with the electronics in the truck.

If your going to run a amp have the radio set with a 3 to 4 watt key and have the modulation limiter put back into the radio and remove the swing kit/mod kits, have it set at 100% modulation and nothing more. The old....You have to have a 1 to 2 watt dead key or you will blow up your amp is complete BS and is good for nothing other than putting money in the pockets of the cb techs. Contrary to the belief of 90% of all truckers out there,a amp is not supposed to make you louder,it's not. It is only to make your signal be heard father away and if turning on an amp does make you louder then you can be sure that some fool cb tech has done things to your radio that he should not have and you have pissed your money away for nothing! So with a low dead key radio you are over modulated and bleeding all over the place. With a higher dead key you don't have all of that forward swing and are therefor not over modulated and you will sound the way you should with out causing bleed over and stray RF problems with your electronics.

You can listen to me or you can smoke another computer, what ever you want to do. After 15 years of messing with this stuff i do know what i'm talking about. But i would bet, like most truck drivers you will do what you want anyway so...what ever. Dont mean no disrespect but most people will listen to who ever tells them what the want to hear and could care less if its the right way or not.
After all,its all about that swing right.

One last thing. When you turn your amp on the guy sitting next to you should not be able to tell that you did. So if he can,go back and shoot your CB tech!

Or be like me, and leave the danged radio alone. I don't need to talk to people 30 miles away. Heck, most days I don't want to talk to people 30 feet away.

CT I have to ask how you have your radio set up to speak to people at 50 miles.....and where are you located? How heavy was skip that day?

I think the best I ever got out barefoot was 13-14. And skip was not rolling that day. In fact it must have been virtually non existent that day.

All I had was a Cobra 148 GTL on 19 AM and a 102 whip.

I have heard from some truck mechanics that with anything over 200 watts with the newer electronic engines you may end up with all kinds of goofy problems.

I have 2 radios, A Uniden 78XL, for regular trucker BS, the second radio is my 2510 that I use religiously for sideband DX'ing. I was thinking about a good clean 500 W under the 2510 just for a little bit extra. It's really not a must because as you know the 2510 is a beast on sideband barefoot! Thanx for the advice Tater!

Texas star amps are about the cleanest ssb amps you can get.Your right,a 2510 is hard to beat.......and almost impossible to find parts for!
