I’ve heard of this but hadn’t seen it till now. It’s a plug. Same kind as a freeze plug in engine blocks. Dig all the crude out of it and see. Manufactures attempt to make them a “sealed” unit like all the new cars with dipstickless transmissions.

at first I didn’t believe it either, but this was the only cap where oil could be added. In the end, I went to the nearest mechanic, and we ran a lot of effort to pull it out.
This was be installed backward from factoryAttached Files:
SmallPackage Thanks this. -

You mean there was no drain plug at the center bottom nor a filler plug on the top or front side ?
-
I can only speak of the ones that I’ve seen, but they have a small 3/8 pipe plug on the front of the diff and seems it’s only the front one. The rear is in the same old spot.SmallPackage and Diesel Dave Thank this.

Are they at the same fluid level? In the past there have been a few that had to be filled with an extra quart or so over the usual fill plug level. They had fill plugs at the top of the gear case above the input shaft.

Same level, but a pain to fill because of the size of the hole.SmallPackage Thanks this.

If i ever see this now i know to just weld a cheap taiwan socket to it and back it out that way.Sons Hero Thanks this.

Some of the older trucks came out with a plug in the differential not in the housing. I don't know if that yours may be one of them.

Sorry I reread yours is a 2020. I guess somebody just played a trick on you.
