Unfortunately, I think, according to these manual drawings, it would be considered, 'necked down', as you call it. I need to get the tool to remove the handguard, as I guess my fingers no longer are strong enough to pull back and hold that delta ring.

By the way, the rifle is a civilian replica of the A2, not the A4 I had erroneously stated.
This link, however, may give you the visual you need to see if it's what you think. I know it doesn't have that little notch in the barrel where a bipod could be mounted forward of the front sight, but the area I think you are referring to, is necked at both ends. Here's a link:

I have a couple ( one of youngest daughter's daughter and son's oldest son) that fight with each other the whole time they're together, but when they're apart all they can do is say how they wish they could be together! Reminds me of one of my Dad's sayings: "When kids are good they are very good, but when they're bad they are horrid". I'm afraid he was referring to me with that saying.
