A female Ready-mix driver actually put me on the available position lol. She trained me on both the Front loading Ready-mix trucks and Dump-trucks. My mom has been driving trucks since the early 90s. She experienced a few set backs in this male dominated industry, but the "spirit of the time" is different now. Women are doing everything. I was talking with this beautiful registered nurse who also had a decade of experience as a heavy equipment operator. It was embarrassing to have a female come change my truck tire on the side of the road, but hey *shrugs*. A woman will find a place anywhere she wants in the work force.
Feedman, Big Road Skateboard, D.Tibbitt and 3 others Thank this. -
My ex-gf, who I'm still friends with, was also a truck driver most of her life. She started in the early 80s, and some of the stories she told me would curl your hair, if any left, that is. No women's showers, rude dock workers, "hey lady, go get the driver", "I am the driver", she'd say,,

, purposely make her wait, but she stayed with it, and has more miles than me, I'm sure. Dump trucks, no better. When I drove for an asphalt co., on a slow day, we had to haul "regrind", a boring job hauling ground asphalt from a pile to the plant. A gal filling in for her husband, couldn't run the loader, and you should of heard these big macho men making fun of her on the CB. I ended up helping her load her truck. Years ago, like my friend, she grew up on a farm, and could run any machine, so truck driving was a shoe in for her. Today, we just don't have that and everything has to be learned. On the plus side, research shows, women in trucking are more likely to succeed, and today there are over 1.7 million women truck drivers. That's impressive, and what was the single most influential reason I bet ? The automatic transmission.

I think it is great that there are female concrete drivers out there. I ran a concrete batch plant for a few years and the female drivers we had were great and I think the customers liked them also. As for concrete drivers getting tips seems rare. I think she got a tip because she just did a good job and the customer wanted to show his gratitude.
201 Thanks this. -
"Ello mate, ( do they say mate in Ireland?) Asphalt is usually the highest paid dump truck work there is, and very hard to get into. Perhaps as an owner/operator, but most asphalt jobs are union, or used to be and by the hour. Openings rarely come up. Rock hauling, ironically, is the opposite, and the low on the pole for dump trucks. Typically doesn't pay the best, and some shady equipment, because, usually, they don't go very far, and never cross a state scale. The money today in the USA in trucking, seems to be well established companies, that can offer $80-$90gs a year, usually reefer, that have dedicated accounts, or grocery drivers, and of course, any tanker pays well, but as far as dump trucks, not the best. Good luck.rluky13 Thanks this.

I’ve heard it said a few times mostly something more stronger I’m to old for OTR I done Enough of that when I was younger , that’s a nice lump sum my GF lives in Houston regional pays well but I have a Buddy in Wisconsin who had quit OTR after 30 years and he just drives local but it’s a lot of drop and Hook and sitting on docks not much driving involved , might be a better option to get the experience

Thus proving his point

I get tips occasionally in my line of work, although mostly from regulars at this point since I don’t get too many house deliveries anymore.BeHereNow97 and snowlauncher Thank this.

OTR W2 reefer gigs are around 60k-70k per year average, not 80k-90k. The money is in LTL, not in truckload.Last edited: Aug 30, 2025
