We did some hydraulics on some here in the forklift days. Washed out, and done outside only.
Always gave a discouraging date to get on premises to do, extended time to complete, and used a stopwatch to calculate the billed time.
After a few; we got it discouraged down to where it was materials handling equipment (forklift stuff) only, and the lift gates on our welding supply mans trucks. Built up a pump and motor to just swap out, fix his at leisure.

Try to do one thing (Line-Type-Make-), do it well, get your price and collect your money.
A day spent out collecting a couple of 2 month old accounts is better than starting to pull an engine. Engine will be there tomorrow, Money?

Pretty good summation of folks we have all come across over the years. There are lots of expressions that remark on the difference.
"He covers all the ground he stands on", or "You want that done right, go get - - - -- - to do it for you", "Them that can, do..others talk...".

Examples I have lived and drove by that highlight what you said:

Garrard ran cattle racks, but had a couple of older putt-putt reefers. Cattle paid a nickel a loaded mile, reefer 20% of the load.
Out of FL, 90lb boxes of fruit, scale 350. Load 400.. Rate of $2.00 a box Lakeland to MN. Overload paid $100 and he gave us half.
This was the bonus and incentive to run north on snow and ice as far as Fargo in winter. No noticeable fuel used or my speed affected.

Had a company attempt cutting in on our Sturgis,MS to Hollywood, FL Jersey haul. Jimmy tells me to get fuel, see him for money and go to Sturgis, MS, (from Starkville), there was somebody loading down there with 2 drivers going to show us up???
"You beat them down there, there is a $20 in it for you. I fueled and went. Loaded and they said that other truck had been gone about an hour...
I blew them when they missed the 2nd of 4 lights then around Montgomery on US 231. I delivered, pulled off the barn back out to US1,and was standing in a phone booth (when they came in sight) telling Jimmy to wire that 20 to Cross Country at Haines City..
My feet touched the ground 3 times, Ozark, AL- Chism for gas,. Suwanee River scales at Old Town for the health cert on the cattle, Inglis, FL, for gas. They in a 750 Jimmy diesel, me in the Red V195 IH. Run always paid 918 miles chute to chute...

Back then, we just cranked up and went. Get done what was dispatched, and come in to do it again. Just the job we had, office was a seat...

Another week in da bag. We is caught up in the shop might do a lil trailer truckin on a very selective scale. I got a smallish track hoe to move Friday for a friend. He has it bought so all I gotta do is bring it to him. Bout 35 miles or so. Probably haul corn to the bins bout 5 miles a round I’m guessing. Maybe I won’t get put on their rice….they got a machine threshing each. Rice is ok it’s just slow paced I guess. Not to mention it goes to town and I’m not confident driving that far lmfao
