That is ONLY true on the interstates and other highways designated as part of the "national network" of truck routes.

Once you get off the national network and onto the state and local highways, there are places where 53' trailers are NOT legal...just like there are places where 102" is over-width....just like there are states where 80,000# is overweight on the state & local highways.

All states allow "access" to food, fuel, loading, unloading, and rest. Some allow "unlimited" mileage. Others only allow you to be a mile from the national network. Most fall somewhere in between.

Before you jump off the big road to cut through the sticks, know where you are and what the laws are...otherwise, it gets expensive.

It used to be a $120 fine to have a 102" trailer and a $540 fine to have a 53' trailer if you were off the designated routes....

...and no, the presence of a scale house on the road does NOT mean it is a designated truck route.

    Don't ask me how I know.:biggrin_25521:

    Gentlemen,

I found a really nice 48' refer for sale w/ an interior adjustable bulkhead, 8years old , for sale from an O/O who just had lower back surgery and cannot drive anymore .

My question is will I be limited as to what I could haul, are most refer loads requiring a 53'?

You would do just fine with a 48' reefer.

I've pulled many a produce load where 53' is needed. Not all produce is carrotts/melons/taters.

    Guys,

If the purchase went through on the 48' refer,
I was hoping to run dry van w/ the refer as well, at that point most of the runs require a 53' correct?
