I’m not Chinatown, but my opinion, #1, DON’T DO IT!!! This site alone has eleventy8 threads on it of people that have tried it, and got burnt. 1099, you are nothing but a pawn, to be used until it’s about over, then sacrificed. #2, is you will need a lot of prayer and supplication, great independent wealth, and (likely) a low self esteem until it’s all said and done. #3, an attorney. Very important. Probably the MOST important, after divine intervention. #4. An open mind. You asked for opinions, from people who are in the industry, and you will get opinions, whether or not you like or agree with them.

Go read some of the threads that @ Sons Hero suggests. "there must be a way for a driver to become successful as a lease purchase operator." It's called Fleece Purchase for a reason. It is set up for the driver/lessee to fail, does not matter what the driver does. Almost no one makes it and those were probably a mistake where the company missed cutting off the driver's income before the last payment was made.

There’s a way to be successful at lease purchase:

1. lease your truck independently of whatever trucking company you sign with. That way, if you don’t like the rules to the playground, you take ALL of the toys and go to another playground. On your operating contract, you will be called an owner operator.
2. You as the driver, get a guaranteed pay for miles, like $.40/mile and every thing else goes to the truck. This way you ALWAYS have income instead of the lease payments snowballing when you have a bad week, wiping out all income.
3. You have 100% control of all things maintenance. The biggest killer of the average lease operator is when they pull into a company terminal or a designated shop, the service writer makes the maintenance decision. They will empty out your maintenance accounts. This is lethal to a lease operator.
4. Your company has its own contracts and dedication customers. If you have to rely on load boards as your bread and butter, you are probably going to go broke.

 

If You log in to your clearinghouse. It tells 5 years or something else. Which ever is longer.
