This maybe the best deterrant. But how do you explain that GUN to DOT or DPS when you get pulled over. It really sucks that this thread is even going on. Like I said it only takes one bad apple, and it ruins it for everyone. And we are supposed to be protectors not predators.

Guns are NOT illegal in trucks. There might be issues in some states, but if one is properly prepared...it shouldn't be too big of an issue if you are knowledgeable about the laws.

The gun comment didn't 'ruin' anything at all on this thread...simply another piece of advice. You say we are supposed to be protectors and such...well I don't know what else protects like a gun does. I mean...maybe its just me, but I wouldnt feel too threatened if a gal pulled out a teddy bear and aimed it at me.

Thanks again to all of you for the helpful advice, I too feel like I would be safer if I could keep my gun with me. I'm used to taking my ruger with me when I'm out on my bike, 4-wheelin, or in my auto, for protection from either the 4-legged and/or 2-legged varmints whom think I may be easy prey. But I've been told that I can NOT be in possesion of any firearm while in a commercial vehicle even though I legally hold a valid permit to carry. I feel truckers should at least have the option to chose to carry a firearm legally if they want. I know this is probably opening up a 'whole new can of worms', but I don't understand why are they not allowed the same priviliges as everyone else. Ahhh, what do I know.........:biggrin_25510:

I'm just gonna keep in mind all the helpful information that y'all have been so kind to share with me.......I really appreciate it.
Y'all Be Safe and God Bless........TCG:biggrin_255:

Not real sure about what some may think, but I asked a female DOT officer if it was against the law to carry a fire arm in a truck and she told me she didnt know of any law against it, and further more she certainly wouldnt go without one. (This was in 2001) Most of the laws you run into are about concealed guns anyway, so as long as its in the open where it can be seen, be it a pistol, rifle, or shotgun you should be legal (unloaded of course)........I've never had any problems! Nor have I ever been asked by DOT if I was carrying a fire arm, I was asked that question entering a military base in SC. I told them I had a gun in the cab, they took the gun, then returned it upon my departure. No biggie, But if you want to set your mind at ease there are DOT officers with open threads on this site that would be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the subject. I'm sorry if you think I'm a "bad apple" for carrying a gun for protection, and whilst I've never had to use it, I can guarentee when the day comes that I have to employ it, I'll not be the one scared for my life!

Please do not misunderstand, I am all for protection for you gals. I may have been wrong, but it was my understanding that you could not carry a fire arm in a commercial vehicle. If I am wrong and you actually can then by all means protect yourself. I would carry one if you in fact can. I think the problem is from state to state the laws are so much differant on this topic. I should have done more research on this. "Sorry" I will do some reseach and let you know what I find out. Until then if their is someone who knows the gun laws please educate me thanks:biggrin_25524:

I dont know if it is 'illegal' or if companies just forbid drivers to be armed
I know that the company I worked for at one time, did not allow pepper spray, and definitely not mace or tasers or firearms, you would be fired if caught with any in the vehicle, company policy. You could have a pocket knife as long as the blade wasnt over 4 inches
Personally, I never felt the need for a weapon in the truck, I liked my tire iron :biggrin_255:
I always ran the seat belt through the door handles, if you have to make a fast exit, the release is right there in front of you and it will snap back fast. If someone breaks a window to get in, then its most likely you will hear it and have time to bash their skull in before they get in.
Try not to park at rest areas after dark, good trip planning will keep you out of those for the most part but sometimes you just do not have a choice. Its a part of the job, just be alert and aware. I wish you all the luck in your new career and hope that it works out for you.
