The fella that I knew contracted to Fish & Game to tag or do research. He may have hunted with them as well, I'm not sure.
Shooting them out of a tree doesn't appeal to me either.

In my younger years in North Idaho I lived in a cow camp from May through September, which was up on the mountain. We would gather in the fall at the same time bear season was open. Each year guys out of the Spokane area would bring hounds up to hunt bears. They didn't make gathering cows any easier, and it seemed they would hunt the weekend and spend all week trying to find their dogs driving around the old logging roads. I wasn't a fan.

 

He will get us out of whatever situations the gathering you suggest will inevitably occur.

 

There's big 'ol owls here. Sit on the buildings hoot n screech all night. A couple nights ago sitting in the recliner one was on the roof right over me, he must have been hootin' trash to the other one out there 'hoot!hoot!" then it sounded like Santa and all the reindeer on the roof. I've never heard a full on owl fight before. Pretty intense, they really went at it.

 

I’m probably a hypocrite cause there’s nuth’n more fun to me than chasing something with a dog — any kind of dog — the kill’n part isn’t really that hard to do and you do it to put meat in the freezer— except chukars— chukars are in a special category— and I forgot where I was going with this

 

It's definitely a very effective method of huntlng, and one could argue that if it's not a mature bear or cat, you can leash the dogs and leave a tree.

I've got nothing against the houndsmen, it's just not my way.

But I do like watchin good dogs work at what they were made for. Whether it's herding, pointers, hounds, any of em.
