I am a licensed firearms dealer. It is ok to have a firearm in your cmv in some states but what if you get a load to somewhere it is illegal like NY. There used to be a DOT regulation against it but I understand they changed the reg. Sarge is right, I have seen plenty of people pass and it changes you. You never forget. I heard one driver who rightfully killed an armed assailant with a flare gun and he no longer drives. You are not likely to get into a life or death situation if you are unarmed. Your belongings aren't worth a life.

There's alot of southern states that allow you to carry your firearm in your truck. But some states will throw you away if your caught with one.
I have a friend that use to carry a shotgun with him. You don't want to get caught with one in your truck in downtown Chicago , New York city or states above N.Y My Two cents......Good Subject:smt023

I've been all over this country and I've only been 2 places where I felt that it was absolutly neccesary to carry a gun, some parts of Miami and some parts of LA. Just holding it up will eliminate alot of foolishness. I know of many drivers that carry 2 or 3. People assume that because you drive a truck that you have some cash on you and that since you're not from that area that you are an easy mark. IMHO if a driver is responsible enough to haul thousands of pounds of hazmat(capable of injuring or killing hundreds of people) into and out of major metropolitin areas, surely he's responsible enough to carry a pistol for protection. Over the years I've heard of drivers being robbed and even killed so there are times when it might be beneficial to have a firearm handy. As far as I know it's still illegal to carry one in a big truck.

please do not go around saying any such advice. you may be as far from the truth than you know. many trucking companies DO NOT ALLOW WEAPONS IN THE TRUCKS.......PERIOD..........

you would be in violation of company policy, and face charges. you CANNOT CROSS STATE LINES CARRYING A WEAPON (firearm). any firearm permit (or license) is usually for the state you live in......ONLY.......you would need to do an extensive search for EACH AND EVERY STATE, and then, the laws change nearly daily, and you will never be able to keep up with all those changes. you risk putting yourself in jail for mandatory terms.

YOU ARE GIVING OUT BAD ADVICE..................

I believe Rainman's advice was stating there is NOTHING in the FMCSA book stating you can NOT carry weapons, which was the original question.
You are correct most companies do not allow it.
Rainman was also stating "Facts" every states law is different on the laws of carrying a gun.
In Canada you can not have a weapon, I believe you go to jail if you do (I could be wrong on that one).

Carrying weapons is not against DOT regulations! You do have to abide by state laws on weapons! Company policy each individual would have to check with their own company!

I believe it was just a little confusion on how you read the post. No punt intended here! He didn't quit give false information @ least from the way I read it, I read it 2 times to make sure (ok 3):toothy1:

The best advice I can give is this..... Try the Midnight Trucking Radio Network. They have weekly DOT and State officials that take calls on the laws of trucking and answer them. Try that.
Otherwise I have heard from my dad (whom is a Licensed gun Dealer and Trainer) is if you have a permit to carry it's legal in any veichle. But also I have heard in CMV's it's a fedral violation to have a firearm.
Best bet, check with the Law Officials. And get it in writting, that way if a problem ever comes up, you have evidnce to protect ya, and not just he said it's ok.
