I think I'm gonna have to change my training big time. Definitely more time on trail, more long slow runs to build endurance, hill repeats and sprints to build V02 max and speed, more strength training.

Where we started was 6 or 7 miles uphill right outta the gate. I looked back at my heart rate, and you can see I came out too hard, and that’s never gonna work.

My goal when I started running was to do the 100 miler of this same race. Registration opens in February and I think I've learned enough that I can train up to it for next year.

Back at it this morning. Gonna keep up with this low and slow stuff. It really is harder to run slower than it is faster. Hopefully it pays off in the end.

It’s really hard to run slow, but it does pay off in the end because you build endurance. I’ve been reading how Zone 2 running is the best way to build endurance and stamina. It took some time for me to get used to, but I did notice a big difference over a few weeks.

Gotta remember to get some carbs and electrolytes in on these longer runs. Quads were really feeling it the last 2ish miles, and even though I slowed down almost a minute per mile towards the end, heart rate continued to rise.

There are some hills near the end, and that’s where I hit the 140's. The rest of the run was mostly below 130.

Do you use a running vest on your long runs?

I do now. I realize that anything over 10 miles I need to have one. I bought the USWE one. It came with two side pouches, and I also bought the blatter for the back of it. It also has places for you to put gels or whatever else you want to carry with you while you run. It was expensive, but I hardly know I’m wearing it.

Nice! I used the Solomon Adv Skin 12 on my 60k, but will be looking for something a bit smaller for road runs. Maybe in the 6-8L size. I'll check theirs out.

I forgot to mention, but I signed up for the Fort Smith Marathon in late March. Should have plenty of time to train and get the nutrition figured out. Maybe gain a bit of speed too.

Enjoy your run. I'm headed for the mountains for a few days.

How did you like the bigger pack? Was it light, all things considered?

I signed up for the Columbus City Half Marathon in April. I’m still looking for a full to do next year. My brother mentioned something about doing one in Utah in May, I might sign up with him.

Below is the pack that I got, just in white. And yes, I did pay full price. Have fun in the mountains!

I don’t know if this is nutrition or not, but I’ve been using LMNT Salts and AG1 for the past year. Those salts are actually pretty important to keeping the water in the body, plus they have potassium and magnesium. The AG1 is basically all your greens in a normal diet, plus other nutrients. They also have a sleep one to help with recovery. I have only used the sleep one a few times, so I don’t have an option on that yet. I’ve also started to mix creatine into my protein shakes too, I’ve been doing that for about six months now.
