I I'm looking at a truck that has the International dt360 engine.

Just wondering what anyone thinks about that engine in the 26,000 lb truck.

I like that it has liners, how good of an engine is it?

I know they compare it to a 5.9 Cummins, and it probably doesn't have the balls of it or whatever else, but it's a truck engine. It's a rebuildable heavy duty truck engine made for a truck.

Who has had one or worked on them, what do you think?

While the DT360 does have liners etc it’s gonna be really underpowered. The DT466 would be better for that kinda weight.

As far as being a good engine they absolutely are but as with anything you over work it it’s weak points show.

Cummins offered the 8.3 for this weight class for the very same reason.

    I had a S1700 with a DT360, 5 / 2spd that I traded for the 1980 General. Basically a good engine but very under powered compared to the 466….

You can look up gasket sets. I thank the 360, 408, 414, 436 and 466 all use the same head gasket. Off the top of my head as I did not look any of this up. The 360 was a great bus motor. The 408? had a charge air cooler next to the radiator. In a spreader truck ( fertilizer ) but it could not make the turn on the end get back up on top of the ground in light soil.
I am going places you did not ask and most people will not understand. Trucks running on plowed dirt can be like skying. If you get up enough speed you can get up on top of the powder or dirt and stroll. Those little DT's were so weak when you turned around you just could not get back up sometimes. Those super singles in the front were pushing dirt.
Bypass the air fuel control. Slide the cover for the rack, give it some fuel, and you can sky all day. Just never run them hot and they will wear you out everyday.

    I like that statement.
That is the way the old 5.9’s of the 90’s were in anything above 26,000 gvw. Operating instructions for them old engines should of been. 1)Put your foot on the pedal and push it to floor. 2)Then apply palm of hand on knee and continue to push down on lower leg until you reach your destination. 3) Failure to hold that position will cause vehicle to slow 20 mph in an instant and take 20 minutes to regain speed. 4) Do not use cruise control because it is worthless without the extra hand on knee mash to the floor.

If you don’t care how long it takes to get there you will be fine
Probably is a more reliable engine in that application and definitely heavier built than a 5.9 Cummins
There is very little if any parts interchangeability with the dt414 436 466

I got a dt466c in a 31k truck and its underpowered. Although I think it might have a fuel issue. It run great, sounds great. There is a fuel pump upgrade rhat would help. You got to get a P-pump amd then the adapter from...
