Occasionally my past of having driven a truck comes up in conversation during my goings-on at the office. Nearly anyone I know of has a similar frame of reference of having an uncle that did it all his life, but never had the time to be around to tell them anything about it.
I don't often ever hear about the transient, the one just covering bills for a bit until some arbitrary event happens; and even less often when the event actually happens.
So, is driving your 'forever' gig? Or are you planning to make a pivot to a different career? Why, or why not?
Do you plan to drive... forever?

I plan to keep on trucking for another 12 years at least and then retire. I definately plan to take a shorter easier run as soon as my seniority allows me to lock down a run in the lane I’d prefer to run.

Right now I’ll say yes, but also no. Cross Country has their eyes on me for safety or terminal management. I said no once to the safety gig, but I’m kinda looking at it as a maybe now. I’m feeling like I don’t want to drive much longer, going on year 27 behind the wheel and I’m tired of it.
Going into safety has a few perks but also a few drawbacks. I’m not really interested in terminal management, but I suppose if they let me put my touch on it, as long as I abide by the company rules.
So my answer is we shall see.The_vett, Rideandrepair, McUzi and 2 others Thank this. -
I got my commercial drivers license (Chauffer's licenses back then) in 1982.
I'll have 44 years when I retire May of '26, so...... yep... I guess so. Twenty six more weeks.The_vett, kemosabi49, basedinMN_ and 15 others Thank this. -
I took 1 1/2 years off trucking after 15 years in in ‘94 to consider another occupation. Ended up returning when I got a cold call to drive for a company, “quick turn around to the coast” owner heard I was sitting around doing nothing
Rideandrepair, McUzi and hope not dumb twucker Thank this. -
I have been driving 37 years, will be 38 in January. I most likely will be driving until I am unable to.The_vett, 201773, Rideandrepair and 5 others Thank this.

I'll drive until I have nothing more to give to the industry. No firm timeline. If it's for the rest of my life, so be it. Just taking it day by day.
The_vett, Rideandrepair, BoxCarKidd and 2 others Thank this. -
I'll drive forever, IF and ONLY IF I can continue to run my own numbers, schedule my own loads, point to the house the moment I feel like it and not feel like it's work when I work.
The_vett, Rideandrepair, BoxCarKidd and 4 others Thank this. -
Once I got into trucking, I always kept a lookout for something else, but eventually stayed in it until I retired early once I had the money from not overspending. I no longer have ANY interest in traveling by roads ANYWHERE. I doubt I would drive someplace if they were giving away gold bars. I just have zero interest in being on the roads with the general population.
