You do not need to and the FMCSA website supports this, but just because that's the case doesn't mean it will be easy. Many at the FMCSA don't even know the rules they're supposed to be enforcing.

Also, don’t shred your copy of your current authority. When I send brokers my credentials, I have to send 2 pages……..one is my original Sole Proprietor certificate and the new document shows the name change in 2016.

2016 you didn't have people buying #'s to double broker/steal freight.PSM379 and dirthaller Thank this.

I wasn’t aware that things might have changed.

I can’t say for sure but go for it. If you can’t do that in America… what can you do?
-
Earlier this year, I changed from a Sole Proprietor to a LLC.
I had to submit a copy of my CDL, Articles of Incorporation, and had to get a new EIN for the LLC.
My DOT and MC number stayed the same, and the Brokers didn’t question anything.
Some Brokers just wanted a copy of the new COI, and an updated W9 form, and some didn’t even care.Last edited: Dec 14, 2025
