Always cracked me up when some southerner would call it the “Quail-comm.” I only ever had one of those in my first truck at my first job. Paper logbook so dispatch had no way of knowing what my HOS looked like unless I did a “check-call” every evening with the Qualcomm. It was kind of a disorganized nightmare compared to today how everything is automated and electronic. Even had to track my hub miles to calculate my pay and miles in each state on a trip sheet for IFTA. What a PITA!

Yes interesting point you raise there mate, how on earth did people cope most of us go crazy if our cell battery goes flat and we can't use it. The Year I spent driving in the US I was able to do it without no cell or TV, it comes down to if your not used to having it you don't miss it. I guess they read more books, or just spoke to people on their CB's, did cross word puzzles read the newspaper etc etc.

Yeah, that was back when you could actually have a decent conversation with somebody on the CB.

Or the "skip" was working real good and you hear a faint remark that the interstate your on is shut down, only to finally find out the shutdown is 500 miles away.

I remember driving across long lonely stretches of highway in the wee hours running with 4 or more other trucks. Talking back and forth helped keep everyone awake and pretty much alert. Sometimes would even play some silly trivia games.
And if someone had trouble, everyone stopped.

I'm not judging, but this is a true story. About 2 months ago, I was fueling through Mudflap at a rinky dink place on I-81 because it was the cheapest. I'm not that old (52), but I noticed a guy pull next to me. Older

freightliner Coronado long frame. Coronado's are always the best looking FL's.

Anyways, guy pulls up at the Mudflap stop in Raphine Va, and just sits there. I fuel, go in get my receipt, and as I come out, he says hey buddy, out the window. I say what's up?

He asks me to help him, get his Tshirt over his back brace, so he can get out of the truck to fuel. He can't reach behind his back, and get the shirt pulled down.

I stood on the lower step and helped him pull the shirt down. He thanked me.

Nice Freightliner tho, had a Series 60 in it, 6" stacks, I knew by it idling.

#425 plus lbs guy. I dunno how he got up and down those steps, or how much metformin he was on.

    D.Tibbitt and RockinChair Thank this.
