My experience with 8785's was not good. Cat Reman JUNK. At 50k miles all 6 were popping under 2200. 4 of the 6 even failed Cat warranty test. Bought a set of 7w7031's which is the number for the new version of an 8785 reman. Night and day difference
I have 16.4 (iirc) aluminum pistons and or6051 dinosaur Cat turbo and yes it is a little smokey but when you put a load on it and turn it into the wind it will scoot right along and flat burn some fuel too. I watch gauges pretty close and really never have much of a problem with egt's when loaded. More like empty going home in a crosswind (bullrack) That I have to watch and not lug it. Anyways, my point is get new nozzles, not Cat Reman. I use to think that was just their mechanical nozzles but I think I am having issues with Reman 57's in a single out Acert.650cat425 Thanks this. -
Well this is an old thread, and I'm just jumping on here to say that I regret not following @wore out 's advice back in 2020 when we inframed my 3ZJ. I ended up putting it together with the parts for the stock serial number and now I am very tired of this barely 425hp 3zj. So now I'm planning to put in new cylinder kits with either 14.5 or 14.6 compression and or8785's unless anyone wants to jump on here and convince me otherwise lol. I still don't know what I'm doing so I'll probably go through all this again in 5 years....
One thing I hope I can get some help with is to make sure I get the right pistons for my Rods. I believe they are big pin, Wide Rod but the parts @wore out suggested back in 2020 are for a small pin, wide Rod I think. I've searched SIS up and down and haven't been able to make sense of it.
3ZJ41757 is what I'm working with.
Thanks to all you guys that chimed in 5 years ago! A big thanks to @wore out for your incredible knowledge and willingness to share!wore out Thanks this. -
You want the 125-8869 steel top for the big pin steel tops. Don’t buy into to the advance timing. I can provide you some references on how well they doHotRod359 Thanks this.

You're a legend @wore out! Thanks that helps big time. I just confirmed this on SIS and those pistons go on the same 9Y-6054 Connecting Rod as what's in my 3zj so I guess I have big pin. That's what I will plan to order then. Which nozzles will work best with these. I was thinking or8785 and I have some on order but from earlier in this thread 0r8789 were mentioned. Are those the correct nozzles? Does one push more fuel than the other?
-
Now there are 2 pin sizes for the 9Y-6054.
The last 4 on the reman numbers is 3480
And 3481 I think I’m starting to slip with age. I wouldn’t run CAT reman nozzles at this time for love or money. This you want a 130-5187 new nozzle. You want to change your relief valves in your plungers with these. Or you can run a 7W-7031 with what you haveHotRod359 Thanks this. -
Okay I'm too dumb to understand how one connecting rod can come with 2 different pin sizes lol. But when I check the alternate option in SIS it comes up as 0R3480. I plan to get cylinder packs from IPD
And the nozzles I have on order are 7W-7031, I just used the reman number without thinking. I have read enough forums that I was scared to go the reman route. Although one injection shop told me they had decent luck with remans if they matched them before they go in the engine for the first time. Getting close to new price at that point tho...wore out Thanks this. -
And about the nozzles, if the 130-5187 isn't a better fit I'll stick to the 7w-7031 if that means I don't need to touch my injection pump. Ive never heard of the need to change the relief valve. Different pop pressure or something?? Ive got the **5888 pump but maybe all 3ZJ's do I dunno

I had 3 sets of CAT reman blowing the top oring out putting fuel in the oil. Even had them tested before install. We ended up going new and solved that issue
HotRod359 Thanks this. -
I think that’s the big pin honestly. I’ll check after while.
What it amounts to is they went to the wide rods they kept the small pin. Then when they went to the big pin they just machined the pin bore to accept the big pin.
