I never got a bad hair cut at the Iowa 80.... I always ate at the restaurant when i stopped there, good sit down meals in my book..of course you could choose to eat the buffet..

The first time I stopped there was when I started trucking in 1976. It was larger than average truck stop then was part of the Standard Oil chain of truck stops. The 500 lb. gorilla at the time was Union 76, with Truckstops of America (note the word TRUCK, not travel) just coming online nationally.
The same thing has happened to Iowa 80 that has happened to all of them. Starts out with truckdrivers as the main focus, and gradually changed to travel centers, now claiming still to service the professional driver (what a joke that has become) but in reality selling anything to anything with rubber tires.
Now, Iowa 80 is nothing but an example of the convenience store selling fuel and fast food on steroids. With the negative of a major tourist trap added in.
Their own history tracks when the family decided to change course.

Over across the freeway where the camper sales place is now, was a 76 Truck Stop. Seems like it was in the late 90's when it closed, after T/A bought out a lot of the 76 locations.
D.Tibbitt, LowBeam and navypoppop Thank this. -
Last time I was there I found that they were selling gourmet rice crispy treats for $9 each. I couldn’t believe it. I almost bought one just to know how good they are lol
D.Tibbitt and austinmike Thank this.
