Back to the original topic, there was several ways I used to pass the time...

-Smoking cigs and listening to other drivers BS in the TV room.

    -Reading- ALOT

-Working on whatever truck I was driving back. Alot of times we bought trucks & buses that sat for a good while and an airline would have a leak or the dash lights would be burnt out, that sort of thing.

-Sitting up and talking with other members of my crew, there were a couple of insomniacs such as myself and we'd sit up and listen to the CB chatter.

This is was before cell phones and wireless internet, if I had those things back then, I'd likely been online!

Hey BULLDOG, welcome to the forum! Seriously.

But keep in mind that trucking and whining are sort of married, like peanut butter and jelly.:biggrin_2559:

You are a very young guy, (you lucky devil you,) so your whole life is ahead of you. You already have a family, and know the responsibilities of trying to provide for them. This is a good, I SAY A GOOD THING.

It is gonna be tough on you and your wife, to have you gone all the time. It is hard to miss so much while your little one is growing up. But it can be done, without too much heartache to anyone. It really depends on how mature you and your wife are, and how independent she is.

The biggest thing is to keep in touch. Call at least once a day. If you know for some reason you will not be able to call the next day, let her know in advance.

She is gonna have a lot of things to deal with on her own, that most couples deal with together. She will need to "vent" as badly as you will, so be prepared to listen, as well as talk.

It will work much better if she has a support group around her. If she has family and friends near by, you will all be better off. I knew a guy who moved his family clear across the country from all of their relatives. He lost his job, and went OTR. His wife had a very rough time of it, raising the kids pretty much alone.

You might think about trying to get something in the way of "local" work before your son gets too old. These years are ones that once they are gone, it's too late to do anything about.

Good luck, in both your career, and your personal life!

As usual Big Don never leaves any room (for my attack) for doubt! But this time, he did leave a point untouched.

As Don pointed out, your wife will need support (mental...not physical...leave it alone guys) and right here on this forum there is a great group of ladies,... truckers, significant others, wives, trucking industry types (maybe even a lot lizard or two...you see we just don't know for sure what "trucking industry" really means)...anyway, get your wife to get her "moniker" and her own page. the two of you can keep up with each other here, she can see what you are saying (behind her back) and she can clobber you in front of all of us....we love a good knock down!

But this forum is good for you both...get her going before you are gone, and have fun and good luck!:biggrin_255:

    Hey Other Half!
Thank you as well for the very kind post. My wife is in full support of me trucking. As a matter of fact, she just let me take her and my son to Toys R' Us and buy him a 1:32 Scale Toy Truck for him! I was so excited. When I read the posts from you and Big Don to her saying she was invited on here ( which I wouldn't had thought that this forum could be some support for her, so thanks again for the idea ) she got really excited! I am very nervous about going to Hogan on the 24th because I have to pass a road test.. Don't really know how hard it will be... And not to mention I have to go out with a trainer for an entire month and that's a long time for me to be away from my babies! I can go 2 - 2 1/2 weeks pretty well but a month is hell. But I know it will be worth it in the long run. I am also nervous of what my trainer will be like because I've heard a lot of horror stories.... But I had a trainer that was at CRST Van Expedited that I really liked and got along with well so hopefully I get someone that is patient and kind with me. Any feedback on these few worries would be appreciated.
    Thanks for tuning in,

    Bulldog,

One of the real benefits of this forum I have discovered is the fact that it's a clean forum. You won't find alot of coarse language.(Even tho I'm guilty of using that sort of talk often) I joined up back in March and haven't regretted it one bit. There's a wealth of info posted and people always willing to add to that.

I learn something new everyday on here.

    Hey 59!
I've listened to some drivers bs as well and it can be really funny as well as some of it very useful. I also recall listening to a guy on cb radio in Tulsa one time when I was with my trainer at CRST, I believe his name was "Audio" and my grandpa who has been a trucker all his life said he was there bugging truckers on the cb back when he had his tulsa run some 20 years ago. What kinds of books do you like to read? I love to read authors like Clive Cussler, Harold Bell Wright and John Jakes. Anyways thanks for tuning in.... Hope to hear back from ya soon!

I read alot of non fiction stuff, my weakness is Ford Motor Co. history and proclaim to be a "serious Amateur" Ford historian. That being said, I'll read pretty much anything if it can hold my interest past the 5th page.

I am a ford fan myself and I will have to admit that their history is very interesting. I hope to ( once I start making some money ) save up and get me a newish Ford F-150 ( Extended Cab or Crew Cab ).
