Surprised nobody asked, can you slide the 5th wheel forward? Generally, you can never go back to a shipper, once you sign ze' papers, it's your baby. I ran around scales all the time, but I don't recommend that today, with cameras everywhere. If you can't get more weight on the steer, you are kind of screwed and welcome to trucking. Sometimes, a forklift operator may stick a "heavy" pallet or 2, in the front, make sure you ask, do all pallets weigh the same. Takes a while, but you'll see how they work. They couldn't care less about weight. Good luck, you DO have a CB radio for such shenanigans,,,you don't? Well, no biggie, nobody else has one anyway. Good luck, and the only advice I can give is run it at night.

I got to where I hated going thru scales even when empty. Too much chance of an inspection. I drove around em all the time.

4k over on the drives? Nah, sliding yourm5th wheel ain't gonna fix that. Maybe 1k, 1500 could move onto the steers, but unless your steers are REAL light, you'll just end up overweight on them, too! And, if you HAD enough track to slide enough, the nose of your trailer will be smacking your sleeper on every hard turn.

If the shipper overloaded the trailer and it puts you in violation of state/federal laws then you can absolutely go back and have the load reworked.. Shippers/ companies can face hefty consequences for non compliance..Generally you'll need a scale ticket to show them the axle weights.. If they refuse a rework then you can refuse to run that load and you'll be protected under federal law against any retaliation..

Yeah, that IS asking a bit much, I wonder how that happened? They had to have stuck a couple "heavy" ones up front. OR,,,they have a 53ft. and didn't single any out up front. Again, dock personnel couldn't care less about weight, they have 3:30 and Michelob on their minds. 200 miles is a long ways to get reloaded, and why it wasn't weighed after loading, is also a mystery. I had places take a pallet off the back in case of a gross overload, but I don't recall anyone ever reloading something like this, tough luck, Charlie,,

Re: back roads. Going around a scale was a daily thing for me, but I was in an area with lots of back roads, and of the hundreds of times, never remember getting dragged back to a scale. Sometimes, there are no back roads, like Nebraska, and those coops are always open, so other than climbing in the wagon, and throw 100 cases from the front to the back( been there), the time to know what to do is right after loading, not now. How one learns and generally not covered in a classroom.hope not dumb twucker Thanks this. -
If it were me, I'd definitely keep going to Chicago. With the route you took, there isnt much to worry about til you get near Chicago. I'd get close to Bolingbrook, park and begin a 10 hr break or split, wait til late, and take it on in. You can get around just about any scale in Illinois. It's a crapshoot as to whether Bolingbrook would be open late. Trucker path was suggested earlier. It never hurts to ask other drivers at the truck stop if the scale is open either. I'm sure you'll remember to scale earlier next time, if need be.

I just scaled the load here before fueling and the drives are 38k with the tandems all the way up. Total gross only 75k ( that's why I didn't scale sooner, my bad)...anyway...
