I started this deal close to 30 years ago and I still sniff a curb now and then. I see bent trailer wheels every day from intense curb sniffing. So for what that’s worth to you

Don't give up. Where is your location?
Go with a mega if that's what it takes. Don't believe all the crap you read about mega carriers. Some are better than others, but getting your cdl is what's important.201, tscottme, Speedy356 and 1 other person Thank this. -
First off, slow down. You may think you're going slow, but you're not. Be in the gear you want to turn in 50 feet before the turn, that way you have plenty of time to survey your space and chose how you want to execute the turn. Most right turns are going to be 2nd or 3rd gear, at least during a CDL test. Real world is 3 and 4, but make sure to take your time so you can make good decisions.
Secondly, once your bumper clears the object you can center your steers and go straight forward until you know your trailer will clear the apex. Then bring the tractor back into your lane.
My guess is you are either turning too soon or holding the turn too long. Pay attention to how hard you've turned the wheel and where 'center' is. Remember the trailer will continue turning as long as there is an angle between the tractor and trailer. Even if the steers are to the left, the trailer will continue moving to the right. If you see the trailer looks like it might come close to the curb, hug the left as much as you can.
If you think the car is 'encroaching' - ie over the white line or the double yellow, don't be afraid to tell the tester "I believe the car is occupying my space, I'm going to stop before the intersection and wait for space". If they tell you to go, just go real slow and take your time.MACK E-6, aussiejosh, tscottme and 1 other person Thank this. -
I feel like giving up because it seemed like everyone else in my class passed, so it seemed like a me problem. I would be happy to get more training, but there's no truck school in my city and I used all my WOIA funding. I would have to pay out of pocket and drive 3 hours total to get to the nearest school, and I'm working full time now. When I was in school (3 months ago at this point) I was doing it full time and I think that's the right way to do itLast edited: Jan 21, 2026

Ok, so the key on a turn like this is you'll actually go a little past the car before initiating the turn. You'll cut the wheel hard until the tractor will clear the car, then center the steers and hug the centerline and you'll clear no problem.
Provided the car is behind the white line. If the car is past the white line, stop and wait, but verbally declare your intentions early. Real world, I'd button hook this turn, but that's not allowed on a CDL testtrucker-chase, Gearjammin' Penguin, Sons Hero and 2 others Thank this. -
Swift Transportation has a terminal right there in the Syracuse, NY area:
Swift Transportation Syracuse, NY Terminal
You might ask them there which Swift Academy (or other outside CDL school) to use....or give them a call.
