2002 or earlier but what's the point? Old trucks are the same money pits as new ones actually probably worse.
-
If I'm going to build a project truck then I'm going to build what I want, and I do not want any the new emissions stuff that requires maintenance and can derate the truck. Also, I really like the older 379s, W900s, and 359s.Gearjammin' Penguin and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Get a 2002 or earlier those were the last of the good electronic engines. 2003-2004 is EGR or acert.
RockinChair and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Wonder how many of the 20 year old Acerts and ISX are still intact. I know if I had to overhaul an Acert it would be built back to a single turbo.
Diesel Dave and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Actually yes, it was a republican president.
In 1970 under Richard Nixon. Basically it was a reorganization of some other federal agencies that were combined and formed into the EPA. -

EGR, DPF and SCR aren't really mandated, they're just the direction most manufacturers chose to follow to meet the targets.
Navistar and the whole Maxxforce fiasco started because they wanted to avoid using SCR. They doubled down on EGR and DPF only and we all know how that went.Last edited: Jan 24, 2026

Red states do not like going after hard working citizens.
Blue states will continue to clamp down on hard working citizens. -
I like old pre emissions trucks but there’s no way I’d buy a 24 year old truck and use it for a daily driver. I deleted my last 2017 model and it did great. Gave me almost no trouble at all.
