I can’t help wonder about the blanket causing the turbo to run much hotter, and fail sooner. I’ve never heard that addressed. Always good things, about performance.

My original one was the old style. Real short, flex pipe always failed at the connection. Only “S” was in the flex pipe. More like half an “S”. Now, my flex pipe is almost straight, no stress point. Freightliner changed them in 01 or 02. Try Superior Turbo in Detroit for a ISSO gauge. Best price, and real good people to deal with. They also have a great CAC made by AVTEK at a good price. The turbo comes w/ bung to weld onto the S pipe. If you do buy a new S pipe, get it with bung already installed. The Sensor is separate and comes in different lengths. Technically the longer the wire, the more it affects the readings. It’s splitting hairs IMO. ISSO site explains it. Interesting anyway. They have 2” and 4”. The 2” fits perfectly in Fld dash. I got the 4”, need to move things around and make a 4” hole. I’ve yet to install it. Be much easier to just buy the 2”. The 4” looks better!! lol. I had a 4” on my old WS.

It definitely keeps the heat in and “supposedly”makes it operate more efficiently from what I was told. As far as the turbo failing sooner, I don’t have experience with that. Last year I replaced the OEM Detroit turbo that was working fine only because I was putting a new manifold on and it was more convenient to do it then than waiting for it to fail later.

I’m sure they’re good. Promoted by the Pros. Just surprised I’ve never heard the obvious question addressed. I plan on getting one. Right now my Trucks parked. Blew head gasket pulling Jellico. Maybe exhaust gasses got too hot? I’ll never know. New pyrometer still sitting in box at home. Oops!

Good luck getting your rig fixed and back to work. If my wire loom hadn’t started deteriorating I probably would have never put one on. I am glad I did now because it seems to work well keeping my engine compartment cooler.

This is why I got a pryometer. My new engine has about 80k on it now. I was hauling a particularly difficult route last year and I believe blew a head gasket. Ruined the whole engine. Only had 500k on it (supposedly). I never want that to happen again lol. My exhaust already has the bung in it. Just need to install the kit. It is probably my next project. I run in a not very friendly environment compared to a lot of the country. High winds, big hills, mountains, long elevations, extreme hot and cold, high dust, plus I do more off-road stuff than most typical truckers. Pretty tough environment compared to when I lived in the Midwest lol.

Got my blanket and heat wrap on order! For less than 50 bucks that has to be the cheapest improvement I have ever purchased for my truck.

And all this time I thought the newer engines ran more efficiently hotter, at least that’s how the manufacturer’s have them dialed in.

That’s my opinion also, but the intent of what I have done is to keep the heat in the turbo and pipe and away from the wiring and parts that don’t need extreme heat. Also what works on a 1996 Detroit may or may not be ideal for a new motor.

Alright final update for this thread. I highly recommend building out your own kit if you just want some some 304 stainless stacks. 5" is doable. I couldn't find anything 6" really to make my own kit. Also there isn't room under the truck for 6". 5" barely fits. The 304 after running for a few days does every so slightly turn a golden color. (Not noticable from a slight distance) I didn't care about this and they are not mirror polish either which I also didn't care about. I wanted a cheap simple exhaust that will last and not rot away. This truck has a N14 and when I bought it the exhaust was singled out to the passenger side with a dummy on the drivers. If you have 525hp N14 I don't recommend a single exhaust. My truck runs with slightly more power, my coolant temps are lower and more steady, truck is smoother under power, my jakes hit harder and more effectively. Exhaust sound is 10/10. Sounds incredible under acceleration but isn't to annoying going down the highway. Jake's are stupid stupid loud now...which is to be expected. That is probably the biggest downside. I still might lengthen the stacks, I haven't decided yet. From the front I like the look currently but from the side I don't. Another positive of the shorter stacks is they won't hit tree branches which I always have to watch for at places I deliver.
