A Thread for the Trainer

I feel the only way to know what you are truely getting into when a person decides they want to drive a truck is coming from a trucking family. But thats just me my step dad and dad are both truckers so I know what it takes i'm a lone wolf at heart and I enjoy the open road nothing sounds more perfect to me than the sound of the diesle truckin on that open road.

 

Thanks to all the trainers for taking the time to post their insights. I am going to school in two weeks and this will help me get through.

 

are we paired random( meaning trainee with trainer) or do they do some kinda compatibility test, i don't smoke ..will they put me with a smoker or none smoker ..thats my biggest concern

 

Hello and Welcome to the Forum

Most companies will accomodate your needs in regards to pairing you with a trainer. For instance, a female can request a female trainer or a non smoker w/ a non smoker... They may have to wait upon the availability though.
You would need to ask either your recruiter of your HR representative.

Geez sounds like he was high....the whole time. in a situation like that how you take corrective action before gets so bad, if any...

Trucking is more like a lifestyle it seems, so for my self as much as I like the adventure of it, I wouldn't have the patience to make the maneuvers you guys need to make.

I'd stick to being a support person, or as relief in long drives....

 

Sorry for posting this here as well as else where in the forum. Not sure if the other place was right.

After CDL (either at private school or company), usually a graduate driver is teamed up with a company driver for training/mentoring.

My question is:

If the exp. driver is driving during the day and the new guy is supposed to drive at night, how can the exp. driver teach the new guy when he (exp. driver) sleeps at night?

Shouldn't be this complicated but being a newbie, I'm somewhat lost here.

Who told you all this hooey??????????????? I can tell you as a trainer I for one whould never let my student drive while I slept. Who's to say that the student can drive well enough yet and if I'm sleeping how can I be teaching. I think you need to check the companies you want to go to and check the track records of the trainers.(ask other drivers). Good luck Be safe Be good Be gone.

Back when I was a trainer, I let the student drive as much as possible, then I would drive any remainder to get the load delivered or to stay on schedule. A good trainer should not sleep while the trainee is driving for, a think, two weeks. The new guy needs two weeks of intense driving practice, 11 hours a day of driving. Plus, extra time outside of this for other things, like backing practice, logbook, maps, planning, company paperwork and Qualcomm procedures.
