So every single night I'm driving down i-85 back and forth, I always see cops pulling vehicles over and searching their entire car. They'll have all of the doors open and the trunk and all of their belongings on the floor.
Sometimes I'll head back the other way like 15 minutes later and the cop and the vehicle that they pulled over are no longer there, so they didn't even tow the vehicle. They just let them go after all is clear. How is this legal?
How are cops allowed to search people's vehicles without a warrant?

Law enforcement can search your car during a traffic stop without a warrant if they have probable cause to believe it contains contraband, you give voluntary consent, or they are conducting a lawful arrest-related search or inventory. A simple traffic violation alone does not justify a search, but the odor of drugs, contraband in plain view, or a K-9 alert can.
Key details regarding vehicle searches:
- Consent: You have the right to refuse a request to search your vehicle.
- Probable Cause: Officers must have specific, articulable facts that suggest criminal activity, not just a "hunch".
- "Plain View" Rule: If an officer sees contraband (e.g., weapons, drugs) in plain view from outside the vehicle, they may search it.
- Search Incident to Arrest: If you are arrested, police may search the passenger compartment if it is reasonable to believe evidence of the crime of arrest is inside.
- Inventory Search: If your car is impounded, police may conduct an inventory search, and any evidence found can be used.
- NJ Specifics: In New Jersey, police generally need reasonable suspicion of criminal activity before even requesting consent to search, and they must have both probable cause and exigent circumstances to conduct a warrantless search.

The only time a cop thought I was drinking and driving and I actually wasn’t I told him to search my car. He tore the thing apart and of course found nothing. I thought it was funny.
