Ive gone to HEB or kawasaki loads down there but best bet is go to houston then deadhead to SA. We go to houston or brookshire alot more than SA. Another driver told me we no longer go to san antonio right after i just got back from there so idk if we still go there or not.Friend and M22 rockcrusher Thank this.

I went to the WalMart DC in New Braunfels a bunch when I was SWR. We used to pickup a load of food trays going right back up to Sysco in Olathe but idk how often that goes or if it’s steady. Usually I would drop/swap in New Braunfels and get sent over to Houston. The New Braunfels came out of Aurora NE, I’d gotten it from there and picked it up off the KC yard to drag down there. Sorry for your loss.Friend, Long FLD and M22 rockcrusher Thank this.

You must be following someone around that has tall tires then. All of the company trucks are set up the same and I doubt someone is going through the effort to crank trailers up to the point you have to crank them down day after day.rokue Thanks this.

I run into this all the time on my yard. We all have the same trucks, tires and there are no holes on the yard to drop a trailer into. Some drivers are definitely crank the landing gear until the pads hit the ground and then some. It is a big problem dunno why. And the flip side of that sometimes I can't even get under a trailer they drop them so low my tires literally won't get under it.Friend, MidWest_MacDaddy and trucker-chase Thank this.

have the same problems in tanker yanking. One of the tankwashes were dropping trailers so slow they’d chew on the truck frame. I complained lol, and lately they still low but high enough to meet the bottom of the fifth wheel. Progress. No more crank o’ madness
My method is to lower gear until it just barely touches the ground. Once I lower the bags and the legs compress a bit with the weight, I find that’s the right height with the tanks. Usually have the baseplate meet the fifth wheel right around the kingpin hole. A little dip under the tank and an easy click.
Company rule is the gear shoes should be 2” from the ground. I found that puts the tanks too low, especially if they’re loaded -
Sorry for your loss… I was going to suggest asking for a brokered load to the area you need to get to… but ya, sometimes it’s just easier to book a flight and be done.
Once things settle down for me, I’m looking forward to tossing a dart at the map and seeing where I can fly to out if Omaha… or just book some cheap flight and see where it takes me.Friend, runningman0661 and rokue Thank this. -
As to dropped trailers etc… I catch myself moaning and groaning and then remember this is the only physical workout I get… and no monthly fees for the gym.
and I’ll tell on myself… most of the time when I get a “high trailer” and complain as I crank it down… I hop back in the cab to discover that I left my bags deflated from dropping the trailer that I brought in … lol … sshhhh don’t tell anyone.
I can’t remember where I was but it was a regular customer and the yard dog came out of his way to ask me not to drop the trailer with an inch to go… not sure why his truck would have issues with height as they have such a huge range they lift trailers… surely they are not very tall to begin with… but ya, he asked me to crank it all the way down for whatever reason.Last edited: Jan 30, 2026
Friend and runningman0661 Thank this. -
I'd actually be surprised if all the 5th wheels are the same height. We've got Freightliners, Volvos, Macks, day cabs, sleeper units, etc.
Regardless, it's easily over half of the trailers I hook that we're dropped too tall, including some heavy ### trailers like at Mars in Aurora and Nestle at Crete, heavy enough that cranking them is a serious workout. There's no way drivers are leaving an inch or two gap when dropping.Friend Thanks this.
