Worked in IT as a sysadmin for a communications company. Company was badly mismanaged and went under during the recession and, since I'd always wanted to try this ever since I was a little kid, I saw my sudden unemployment as an opportunity to satisfy my curiosity about life on the road.

Funny thing is, I've met a few drivers who'd rather be doing something else but feel "stuck" in this job since they have no other skills. I guess I consider myself lucky to have another job skill to fall back on in case I finally decide that trucking isn't working out for me.

Was a college student/crop scout/stock clerk/cashier/electrician helper/lawn maintenance man. Was looking for more money and more freedom. I think I found it.

Life insurance claims adjuster. Hated it. Nothing worse than having to tell a little old lady who's husband just died that the claim is being denied because he got sick and forgot to pay the premiums, causing a lapse.
Or denying a small funeral claim to some parents who just lost their 16 year old because toxicology reports showed alcohol in their system, and since they're underage, it is grounds for denial.
People think insurance companies suck. They don't, but the few and far between instances like this will stand out for both the public, as well as the person who is faced with the difficulty of denying the claims, while KNOWING it's ridiculous to do so.

I worked for a big utlity co., we leased a train engine for rail plowing, jobs could be 1,000 miles long, then onto the world,s stongest horizontal drill rig. I did anything you could think of there. In 98 I quit and ran into the atheletic director from my h.s., he aranged me too, play at the local division 1 school, to see where my skills were. In 10th grade I had d.1 scouts at our games and alot adults who wanted to see the star. The d.1 womens coach payed me, to do a shooting lab, for the women, technique, mental attitude, it,s funny because I didn,t touch a basketball in 15 years and I was a slasher- a quick 1st step and drive it in. That coach is at Mi. state now. I told the girls, it,s like a make believe mob hit, or a sniper, make sure you send the other team home, not knowing what happened, and stay loose and keep having fun. ps I,m a truck driver now.

I was fighting fire and saving lives before the sawbones told me I couldn't do that any more. Had to find something because I'm not the kind that can sit around the house all day collecting a guv'mint handout.

After trucking? There's life after trucking??? Who knew?

Last job before trucking, I was the Head of Security, at a hospital in Washington State, overseeing a staff of 27 officers. Prior to that job, I was a Platoon Sergeant (E-6/SSG) in the US Army/Infantry. Got into trucking at the tender age of 52. Wished I had started my trucking career earlier in life.

I was a Firefighter for 24 years, taught fire prevention to school children, and fire extinguisher training to the public. Did Inspections, Fire Investigations, held the ranks of Captain, Deputy Fire Chief. And I got to drive all types of fire trucks.
