I just got a ticket in the state of Oregon for using my cell phone while driving my personal vehicle. (I wasn’t actually talking to anyone, and I can prove that by my call records.) This is awful because I just got a job as a school bus driver.
Am I likely to lose my job now? I’m going to fight the ticket, but I’m worried I may get fired before the court date, which is set for March.
Any thoughts or help would be great. Thanks.
Cell phone violation in personal vehicle, will I get fired?

Don’t think it’s an issue if you already got the job. I’ve gotten violations while driving a commercial vehicle and the company never brought it up. The issue arises if you start applying for jobs and it’s still on record when they do a background check but if your going to fight it you should be good.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 30, 2026
nextgentrucker Thanks this. -
Yes, you may get fired. Some trucking companies would absolutely fire you over this, with zero hesitation. What your employer would do is hard to say.
Professional drivers should never use their phone while driving. Very simple rule. I feel it’s triple-true for school bus drivers.
If you don’t get fired, you better count yourself so lucky as to never do it again. Ever. You should think every time you think about your phone while behind the wheel that “I should be fired right now.” Because by account you probably should be.
Good luck. Hope you learn your lessonnextgentrucker Thanks this. -
I wouldn't report it to the company. You haven't been convicted yet anyway.
Keep driving until the company finds out.bryan21384, tscottme, wulfman75 and 1 other person Thank this. -

I don’t understand this, ALL THE NEW MODERN Technology available to communicate hands free relatively safely and people are still holding cell phones in their hands and up to their ear…

Wasn’t doom scrolling either: but thanks to everyone for the advice.

Using a cell phone does not mean you were talking to someone. It could be texting or browsing or watching a movie, or just holding it in your hand.
Simply holding it is enough for a ticket. What part of 'hands free' or 'distracted driving' don't you get?
If you get convicted and it goes on your record you will have to report it to your company near the end of the year.
Until then, keep quiet.firemedic2816 Thanks this. -
