When my wife rode with me I was asked a couple times by DOT what our relationship was. "Wife" satisfied all that asked. Most don't.
I always had the proper paper work with me too. -
I think we forgot to mention somehing here.
Passengers have to be in the tractor. You are not allowed to have them in a van trailer. However, there are exemptions for using them to haul mexicans to fields. -

For that mexican exemption, iirc the main requirement was that they can get out from the inside and that its not freezing cold in there...and that you dont poison them.... -
There is an exception to allow passengers to be in the trailer for horse haulers while going down the road, to attend to the horses. I don't think that the person has to be Mexican!

73 Mexicans found in trailer

Border Patrol agents discovered 73 illegal Mexican immigrants crammed in the back of a tractor trailer over the weekend, when the truck stopped for inspection at the Pine Valley checkpoint on Interstate 8.
