Been wanting a Cabover for years and finally bought one to fiddle with. ‘84 362. Former Mobile home toter so probably not the most desirable truck given it’s low HP, relatively short WB, and a single drive axle, but good enough for what I want. it’s not a truck I will ever work, just something to mess around on and agitate my wife with!

Been sitting for years as you’d expect. Cummins BC Formula 300. Spent a solid week cleaning out tanks, replacing fuel lines that were corroded closed, put new fuel shut off solenoid on it, new filters, new starter after the old one bit the dust, etc. pressurized tank today, hit it with some ether since its only about 28 degrees today and it fired up. Idles very rough about 400 rpm’s and won’t take ANY fuel when I move the throttle level on the side of the pump. There is NO CHANGE at all.

Is a full rebuild of the pump in order here? Anything I’m missing or should try?

even at 400 rpm I had about 50lbs of oil pressure and it built air until the governor blew off and the only significant air leak I hear at this point is the parking brake on the dash…..

Trying to piece it together, but want to make sure it runs decently before I waste money on all the other things is needs…..

Thanks - tons more questions coming, but this is first step

EDIT - it is returning fuel to the tank via the return lines and I ensured clean and brand new fuel was coming from all lines

I'd say you've got pump and/or injector issues. Could try running some fuel system cleaner through there but in all honesty I have yet to have any luck with any sort of mechanic in a bottle type remedy. Will likely need to dig in a bit beyond the surface.

Just realized the large flat screw plug on top is a filter. I’m going to pull that tomorrow and see what it looks like….

Most likely the the throttle shaft o-ring is toast. The new fuels will eat them. It is most likely pulling air in and not letting the throttle respond. The pump will have to be disassembled to replace the o-ring because the throttle shaft is c-clipped on the inside. Buy a Dipaco brand kit online from Oregon Diesel and do it your self. If nothing is seized or worn all it needs is an o-ring and gasket freshen up.
The filter on top of pump is just a fail safe filter/ strainer to catch little particles from getting to injectors if pump siezes and fails. It does nothing else otherwise.

Just curious and sorry if I missed it or it is a dumb question....but did you let it warm up for a while? Mine did that until it warmed up...almost as if by design.

Other than a couple different size allen wrenches and pointed c-clip pliers. Just a couple basic sae wrenches and screwdrivers. Depending on the air compressor setup a S-shaped or half moon shaped wrench or a custom one of a kind you bend it wrench may be needed to get the bottom bolt out closest to the engine block out of the pump mounting flange.
Just go slow and gentle when pulling pump apart so you can see how everything goes back in place. Do not touch the two small screws that stop the throttle shaft rotation in either direction. Those need a calibration bench to set. Just leave them alone like they ain’t broke. Anything else just count the turns out so they can go back in to the same settings.

    Awesome. Thanks.

I’ll get that ordered Monday and work on getting the clutch brake cut out in the meantime. That looks like an unpleasant job……

Is the pedal moving the shaft or just the breakaway?
Grab the linkage at the pump and move it and watch the shaft.
