BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Nearly a year after a nationwide arrest warrant was issued, federal marshals have found and arrested a Florida truck driver charged in a 2024 crash on Highway 97 that killed a La Pine woman.
Desiree Danielle Johnson, 35, of St. Petersburg, Florida, was arrested Friday by the Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force in Pinellas Park, Florida, Oregon State Police reported.
Johnson is charged with criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault and reckless driving in the Feb. 29, 2024 crash on icy Highway 97 south of La Pine in northern Klamath County that killed La Pine-area teaching assistant Elise Adair Farrens, 37.
Farrens twin sister, Elaine, told KTVZ News, "It does give me closure, but I will never mend my broken heart like I'm just. I will always carry that weight of her being gone."
Troopers said Johnson lost control of her semi-truck, which spun out of control and crossed into the path of a northbound Honda Pilot driven by Farrens.
A passenger in the SUV, Daviana Trussell, 23, of La Pine, was seriously injured. She was 26 weeks pregnant and suffered the loss of her unborn child. Johnson reportedly suffered minor injuries.
The indictment alleged Johnson was "driving recklessly, in a snowstorm, without chains (and) without the necessary experience" at the time of the crash.
Johnson pleaded not guilty to the charges, and an arrest warrant was issued last February when she failed to appear for a pre-trial conference.
She is now being held at the Pinellas County Jail awaiting extradition to Oregon.

Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force,,,
, hmm, apparently created in 2008, has rounded up almost 67,000 fugitives,,,67,001. I always wonder how these people that commit crimes and run, why they get caught. Not that I would ever do that, but I know of places, NOBODY will find you. You can believe the shmaltz of the pregnant passenger loss, sounds like news "laundry" to me, and I just don't know. This person didn't intentionally want to kill anyone, must have been a tough case, I think she would have done better had she not ran, but too late now. Shows how life can change in an instant. Might want to remember that driving a truck.

"The indictment alleged Johnson was "driving recklessly, in a snowstorm, without chains (and) without the necessary experience" at the time of the crash."
Not defending her as there are not enough details but this sounds like bs. Define driving recklessly? They don't give her estimated speed. Were chains required at that time? And the worst, without the necessary experience. What requirement is there for experience and driving in the snow?
She made things a lot worse by not getting a good attorney and attending the conference.The_vett, OLDSKOOLERnWV, 201 and 5 others Thank this. -

If you flee the scene of the accident, or skip the trial, you lose the right to argue about fairness later. Make good decisions

A poor person from Florida should never be sent out to Oregon in the dead of winter.

Probably carrying a Jeld Wen load out of Klamath Falls or Chiloquin. There isn't much else down there except logging.
I've been on that road many many times and sometimes it does get very icy. I don't ever remember seeing a "Chains Required" sign anywhere though. It's a nearly flat run. There are no hill climbs between Klamath Falls and La Pine so there is no need for chains. I have seen trucks in the ditch on that road. You do have to mind your speed, just like on any other icy road. -
She'll get a maximum sentence and do real time. Meanwhile foreigners can come into the country and get a CDL out of a cracker jack box, kill people, and walk away scott free.

There are chain up areas north of Chiloquin. There’s no big hills but you’re already over 4k feet in the valley. I haven’t been out that way forever. Could be like Drinking Water and Stinking Water and just have signs that say chains advised if road is snow covered.
