Good afternoon everybody!
So I started getting the train chug sound on my motor last week and took the truck to a mechanic near me since my regular mechanic was on vacation. He thought injector #5 was going bad due to zero compression on cylinder #5 and low compression on cylinder #4 so he swapped injector #2 and #5 and the same issues stayed, zero compression on cylinder #5 and now zero on cylinder #4.
My mechanic finally got back yesterday and said the head needs to be replaced so I started doing some research and calling around, Freightliner wants $5,700 for a rebuilt head, plus gaskets and bolts were sitting at $7500 plus labor with a 1 year warranty.
My real question to yall is, do any of you have experience with PDI performance? They have a brand new cylinder head not rebuilt, gasket kit, plus bolts for $6950 out the door plus labor for replacing the head from my mechanic. From talking to their sales rep, he made it seem like its a nice upgrade from the factory head let alone a rebuilt one from Detroit.
What do you guys recommend doing here? Either way I'm gonna spend close to $10K but which option would be the better fit? To me it sounds like the PDI way is the way to go. I've read a lot of guys post on here about PDI performance and swear by them but I've never actually had any interactions with PDI.
I highly appreciate your input and thank you in advance

My only experience with pdi is on the tuner, and it hasn't been all that stellar of experience. I wish I could say different, but the sales line you get answered quick. The help line, you get told they'll call you right back......riigghhtttt..... Hopefully your experience will be a good one.
Rideandrepair and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
How much is a brand new oem head? With something as important as a head, i would stick with OEM.
Sendit, Diesel Dave and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
They don’t offer any new heads unfortunately, it’s all rebuilt. I called three different dealers because I’d prefer to get OEM too. If I want new, it seems like the only options I have is PDi or PAID.Tibbitt and Rideandrepair Thank this.

I see a few places selling them. HHP comes to mind. I don’t know who makes them. I’m guessing they’re all the same Manufacturer. Advertised as higher nickel and larger cooling jackets. Last time I priced them. It was about $3400-$4000 for either reman DD or New aftermarket. That was within 2 years ago. In 2000 I paid $2300. The price gouging is getting way out of hand. $5700 is crazy. $1200 for $500 worth of gaskets and bolts? Wow!!! I’m considering going aftermarket if I need one. Not real impressed with DD reman. I imagine every single one of them have been repair welded. The problem with aftermarket reman has been milling them too much. That’s from DD analysis. When you buy a reman, they want the core. Doesn’t matter what brand or who did the reman. They want to research it. Same with Rod/Main bearings. Brand new, no core or deposit.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
