Probably an annual. We had about 15 hotshot trucks like that where I worked.
In Texas so everyone got a Texas inspection and an Annual DOT inspection. Most had apportioned tags, for interstate freight.

Inspection off the record? If it was "off the record", how would a trooper know if he had one?

My interpretation is that their son had a roadside inspection where it was discovered that he didn’t have an annual inspection on the equipment. I’m thinking that the officer decided to not write him up for it and off the record told him to handle it.

I have had similar experiences with some officers..attitude sometimes makes a world of difference.

    In short.... yes.
Generally speaking, if its a commercial vehicle and he is hauling loads for hire, it falls under FMCSA/DOT and requires an annual inspection.

Just because the driver isn't required to have a CDL, doesn't mean the truck &/or trailer combination doesn't fall under the guidelines.

There's a ton of unanswered scenarios here though. It ain't one size fits all.

    It was a good answer.

    Q: When is sunrise?
    A: In the morning.
Q: Can you give a more specific answer?
A: Sure. Provide a more specific question.

    tscottme Thanks this.

Since sunrise occurs at a different time each day of the year there would be no correct answer without a specific date.

Appologies if I am out of line. I took the "off the record" to mean the officer told him in a friendly conversation. Not in any official manner.

Yes. If you have a dot number, and are over 10,001 lbs you are required to have an annual FMCSA inspection and have a valid medical certificate

Depends what you mean by “DOT safety inspection.” If you’re talking about the annual inspection, that’s required. A lot of people confuse that with roadside inspections, which are different—that’s probably why you’re getting vague answers.
