I keep looking to see if I can find companies that would allow me to stay out for longer durations. I am thinking up to 3 or 4 months before coming back to my home, residence. Instead, I get answers for the shortest period companies promise to put you out, typically they say you will be home every week or two.
Is this just a "stupid" question because any company will allow you to stay out longer durations?
I don't want a lot of home time

Pretty much any OTR company will let you stay out as long as you want. Where I used to work, Britton Transport, which is now Bison USA a guy stayed out 6 months at a time and even then did not go home. He would request to go somewhere he wanted to take a vacation and take a week or two off every 6 months in the location of his choice.

Most OTR companies don't have a limit for how long you stay out...if you can truly stomach being gone for that long.
It might help us....help you...if we knew:
- Do you have a CDL already?
- If so -- how much driving experience do you (already) have?
- If so -- do you have any CDL endorsements? Which ones?
- What kind(s) of freight are of most interest?
- What is your general location (just a zip code would work fine)?
ducnut and nextgentrucker Thank this. -
No, I don't have a CDL, yet, so no endorsements, either, unless motorcycle counts
Am open to independent schools or company training. Whichever seems best.
I am fit, strong, and healthy, so I am not particularly picky, necessarily, about the freight as far as loading, securing, etc. I would have additional questions in that regard regarding working hours (verses drive time). I understand dry freight or refers may be more maneuverable generally with the tandems being movable.
Current zip is 10920. I'm not really tied to it in very many ways, though. I have family in other parts of NY state, Illinois, Ohio, and gulf coast Florida/Alabama.
This would be my second career after an early retirement in about a year at 54 years old. I'm getting my ducks in a row now.Trucker61016 and ducnut Thank this. -

If you haven’t been an OTR driver or had a CDL before there is no way for you to know if you’re going to be able to handle staying out 3 to 4 months at a time. Sometimes that sentiment comes and goes overtime. There’s been times in my 10 years out on the road when I love staying out up to two months And other times I start to hate it. So many factors and variables go into that. What’s going on in your life, what your home life set up is and many other factors, including your mental health, which can rapidly deteriorate if you’re not getting away from the truck. Everyone is different. And you won’t know where you fit into that equation until you’ve done it. You might like it at first and then hate it two years down the road.
as far as staying out for that long, no trucking company that I know of is gonna fight you on that. Especially if you’re flexible while being out on the road. If you’re OK with sitting in the truck somewhere and doing a reset occasionally or having a down day occasionally, while out on the road, they’ll love you. Lol. Because drivers like that are extremely rare. Most don’t want to sit somewhere if they’re out on the road. They want to be making $ if they are already away from home. But after two or three weeks of running hard, trust me, you’re gonna want a day off and you won’t care where it is.
Don’t lock yourself into anything that long until you’ve done it for a while. I’d go out the first time with the mentality of just seeing how it goes and see how you feel. You get a week or two weeks straight of winter weather driving and tight loads? You’ll likely change your mind real quick.Trucker61016, okiedokie, Turbodriven and 9 others Thank this. -

Many refrigerated trucking companies will let you stay out as long as you want. They love drivers willing to run the roads and not complain about it.

Get all the endorsements before graduating from CDL school. Get them all, even if you don't think you'll need them, because those may be the ticket to higher paying jobs in the future.
Also, get a passport or passport card for hauling loads into Canada. Passport Card is good enough for Canada.ducnut Thanks this. -
After 12 mos. experience with your first company, you'll be qualified for many other companies, should you decide to try another company.
nextgentrucker Thanks this.
