Is it even worth starting a career in trucking right now?

I would not spend the money. There’s no ROI for you. The market is saturated with licence holders willing to work for pennies. Insurance won’t touch you.

 

Don’t spend the money very few companies are hiring drivers with no experience right and the ones who are , you will most likely not want to work for anyways . lot of the mega’s even want 1 year experience now . There’s a fresh plane load everyday of applicants coming from places like India looking for the same jobs

It’s a tough market right and probably into the foreseeable future as well . Even highly experienced drivers can’t find decent jobs

 

No, its fiscal and literal suicide. The foreigner owned driving schools, are still operating 24/7/365. There are over a million class 1 drivers in Canada, currently not driving for a job and or looking for work. Companies are going bankrupt daily, the auction yards are overflowing with trucks and trailers. The rates in dump/gravel are so low, most of the Canadian companies have closed, and the larger companies have all shifted to Driver Inc, hiring cheap foreigners. I was recently let go from an LTL carrier I had been with for 6 years, due to lack of work and rates. I then drove dump for 1.5 years with a smaller Canadian Owned company, and their insurance tripled, while the rates fell 30%, so they sold everything and closed the business, again laying me off.

Insurance won't touch anyone with less than 5 years of continuous class one exp now, even if you have a 3 month break in driving history, it could be game over. I honestly suggest doing anything else, I personally went into Heavy Duty Mechanics, working on Off-road Equipment. I couldn't be happier, and would never go back to trucking or even hot shot driving of any kind. (I had 10 years in trucking, 1.5 million miles, LCV, OTR, O/O you name it).

 

Get a job being an airline pilot.

 

Of course it's worth it. Don't listen to the cry babies. No one starts any where except the bottom in every new career change. Just except that you are working for peanuts at the beginning. Getting CDL doesn't mean you must drive OTR. Colorado is paying good money for class b cdl drivers without experience.

 

I don't think you appreciate how much worse things are in Canada .

But if you have a clean record and a few years under your belt. There isn't a good reason to complain about pay. Millions of decent driving jobs available. Just take one. If you don't have a few years ,you suck it up for a few years

 

Again, the markets are completely different. Here, there’s 3/4 of a million cdl holders looking for work.
