I don't drive triaxle, but isn't there some alarm, if there isn't - there SHOULD be.

Yes, it's funny, but not for Driver.

 

Usually its just a light that comes on when you engage the PTO . Half the time the light doesn't work on older units .

 

Back in the day, some of the union trucks had an alarm rigged up to let you know that a deck wasn't sitting on a lock. I never messed with one, but I'm guessing it used to pressure switch on the bottom of the cylinders that would kick an alarm if the PTO was off and the deck was up.

A set up like that would be easy to rig up on a single cylinder on a dump truck

Edit: just dawned on me all the drivers would hate it, cuz it would be blaring the whole time you were rolling forward letting the trailer drop.

 

How about fitting a blind on the windscreen which goes up and down with the body?
Perhaps with a little 'safety' hole in it just enough to peer through as you roll forward as it empties and lowers.
Otherwise, a small hole drilled into the side of the head so that a modicum of commonsense could be injected. Fortunately, I never needed such an operation, although I have done quite a bit of tipper work over many years, I have never rolled forward any more than absolutely necessary without dropping the body.

 

I drove a dump flatbed for W&W Lumber out of Indian Town, FL somewhere back in 94-95.
Anyway, my ford LN8 was an old Ryder rental. 87-88 model yr.

I do recall there being no alarm or light signaling that the bed was up, reckon you just had to have common fkn sense to lower the bed after dropping your load. did that for over a yr and not once did I pull out with the bed in the air.

 

A lot of end dumps I have driven, even with the PTO off, if you are rolling down the road and you have the stick forward to raise the bed like you were dumping it would slowly raise the dump as you are going down the road. I don't know what it is, but mine will do it when I hook to an end dump. There is some kinda vampire pressure feeding the cylinder or something, don't quite understand why or how but have seen it on multiple units

 

If it is hydraulic pressure bypassing, a simple check valve installed stops it.
This must be the 20th time I have seen this???

I'm sure Driver lowered the bed, but pressure is somehow getting there
To make a sudden stop for the "bed only" - under the overpass.

Another bridge Seems careless to me…. But I guess accidents happen. Had an older driver that hauled fertilizer in for years with a nice end dump and was lways careful but one day missed turning the PTO off and hooked a bridge
