I ran real hard for 7 years. Last 2+ years was Coast to Coast.
Im about to take a new job, a 1099 at that. I've been out of the truck for 2 years. Honestly, Im feeling anxious about my decision, because I know how hard I run and how stressful / dangerous this profession is. Oh, and Im 58 years old.
I have basically 3 questions. All advice is welcome.
    1. How long before my nerves settle once Im back in the truck ? Hours ? Days ? Weeks ? I've always run at night & overnight when possible.
    2. This is a 1099 position. This also is a new challenge for me, as Ive always had a W-2.
    3. Would you ever take a 1099 position without an LLC first ? If anything, God forbid unfortunate should happen, someone could sue me for every penny I have saved. Correct ?

I took a little over a year off and when I got back in the truck it was like I never left. Felt a little strange at first but it went away in no time.

A guy I know was out of the truck for 30 years. Before that he ran hard. Owned a business with 3 trucks. Got worn out with running the business and driving himself. So he quit for a while and took up a business of just woking on trucks.

One of his customers put him in a position where he had to run a load for them. He said by the end of the day, it felt like he never left truck driving. Like those 30 years out of the driver's seat never happened.

About the 1099 position - can't help you. Not one bit interested in working for someone on a 1099. Something is usually up with those jobs.

I guess you have not yet realized that we create most of our own stress and danger ourselves, since your post just drips with past, present and future stress.
Stress equals danger, for everyone - not just you.

After previous jobs of security guard (some bordering on police), waiter, bartender, computer tech... driving a truck at Swift was the least stressful of them all.
    It was relaxing.
I was making more money than any of them, and I had more control over what I chose to do.

Of course you have to learn the system you are running under in order to control it to your advantage.
And you need a more laid back attitude, not one of 'running real hard'.

If you put money first and foremost, then quality and safety and sanity go right out the window.

I quit driving for several months. It took just a couple days of driving at most and I was right back in it and wondering why I had ever left it. As far as the 1099 thing, idk either. I worked a 1099 job for a while, but thankfully never had any accidents.

Not all LLC’s are the same. Just because you have an LLC, it is not a guarantee you are protected if ‘YOU’ royally screw up. It just slows down the legal process. Best to consult with a ‘tax attorney’ and an attorney that is well versed in traffic and liability laws.

Rochester, NY.... I always did 34's wherever I was close to running out of hours. Someplace with showers and close to a Walmart and some restaurants. I'm going to tell this other guy that I can't do the 1099 thing. It just makes me too nervous, plus at tax time would be a royal pain & no benefits.

Yes. They are close by. They have inward facing cameras, and their trucks are slow. Pay is not great either. And, although they have terminals in Wisconsin & Idaho, Im afraid they'll want to run me up in the NE and up and down I81 all the time.
I wouldn't be happy running those lanes all the time.
