West Texas 12 years ago. Welders were making 50+ an hour. Hazmat drivers 29 an hour. I'm in my mid 50s I'm kind of locked into my profession. An electrician on the North slope of Alaska is upper 50s an hour. Pretty sick money, drivers mid 40s up there for 4 months.
Do any of you have days were you contemplate your job?

I did my training at a big mega fleet. We did like 160 hour of classroom and city driving and backing. Then we had to go like 30,000 miles with trainer. They told us anyone could hold steering wheel going straight down the highway. So we did lots of city driving when training in school before with trainer. They trained me how to make left and right turns. So you don’t run someone over standing on the sidewalk. They trained how to switch lanes so you don’t run someone off the road and how to drive in snow. The big mega fleets have safety meeting every month. Even my small company now we are required to watch safety video every month.
I was trained how to pull out of a parking spot. It seems simple and nothing you probably think about driving a car. You pull out in first gear going slow. So you can check your mirrors to make sure you’re pulling out straight, so you don’t hit other trucks and Turn to soon and take someone hood off.tscottme and BrothaTrucka513 Thank this. -
You've received quality training at that mega fleet. I was all nerves for a while after completing the refresher course back in 2014.
I kind of wish that I'd have been at a company like yours because a good trainer is hard to find anymore. I didn't do any city driving til after I'd got on a dedicated semi-local account at a full year of experience. Shouts out to the ones who go the extra mile to assure that their drivers properly trained
Brandt Thanks this. -
There is one region in particular in MD where you’ll know you’re there even if you never saw a sign saying it. You can tell just by how the indigenous population drives. We call it “Prince George’s county”.
Of course, it borders the worst neighborhoods in Washington so that pretty much explains it.tscottme and FullMetalJacket Thank this. -
Get over it, or find another profession.
You're approaching trucking with the wrong mindset.tscottme Thanks this. -
Reporters asked an early astronaut if he was worried about the rocket he was scheduled to fly blowing up and killing him.
The astronaut replied: if you aren't worried about that then I don't think you understand what's about to happen.Ddh77777 and hope not dumb twucker Thank this.
