Thanks for that. I have hauled some water trucks before but never even thought about it until recently. And today was looking at a local run to move an empty tanker and broker said i didnt need it since its empty. That sounded a bit ridiculous to me but wasnt sure... Now im wishing i wouldve got all my endorsements in cdl school.. cant be that hard to get i would imagine?

I'm not doubting you when did this update take effect? I've hauled at least 2 water trucks this year both tandem trucks.
Maybe I just got lucky and they didn't ask.
Either way it's good to know how it's enforced now .cke, Feedman, sawmill and 1 other person Thank this. -
It's a 20 question test in WI and only need to get 16 right to pass. I added doubles/triples to pull my big setup and I just read the book in the parking lot then went and passed the test. I've always meant to add tanker just to have it but never bothered since chances are near 0 of me actually pulling a tank.
Pretty sure I remember hauling a couple empty ISO tanks like 8 years ago from a port down south up to Chicago. Guess I probably should have had it for those?
Personally I'd probably do it if it was an empty truck/trailer on my lowboy or going a short distance locally. I wouldn't go taking off across the country with an empty tanker trailer though.JolliRoger, CAXPT, cke and 4 others Thank this. -
I went down a rabbit hole after sawmill posted that and i think hes right, If its designed to carry liquids its classified as a tank trailer and then needs an endorsement. But it doesnt really define if its empty or loaded? Unless that is covered under the part where it says "designed" or "rated capacity" . Guess that would cover it to include empty stuff as well. Im to dumb to understand government wording.cke, SL3406, sawmill and 1 other person Thank this.

mannnnnn, was really hoping this crap was only in Canada by nowJolliRoger, CAXPT, cke and 8 others Thank this. -
That's exactly what I saw. I suppose a guy could make the argument that it's been done before with no problem, or nobody checked. But all it takes is one Barney Fife with the desire to make a name for himself and suddenly you're trying to DataQ something that makes you wish you just found a way to dance between the raindrops on a back road.
All that to say despite what the law says I'd just keep my hat low and send it on a scenic route. -
I know a ranch hand that would try that if nobody stopped him from doing it. He seems to think that he can ship a D6H on a step deck.JolliRoger, CAXPT, cke and 8 others Thank this.

for what it’s worth, about 20 years ago, a neighbor man bought a tandem axle W900 dump truck, had several removable fertilizer tanks inside the dump bed… he needed someone to go with him to bring it home, so my dad did. Dad was driving the dump truck home, and I don’t know what he did exactly, I guess he never told us, but he got stopped. Officer opened the coal chute, looked inside the bed, and grounded him because he did not have a tank endorsement. he sat there until night, and brought the truck home back roads, the tanks were empty, but the officer said since he had the potential to be a “tank truck” he fell under all the same restrictions.JolliRoger, CAXPT, IH Truck Guy and 8 others Thank this.
