In Benjamin Franklin's 1752 kite experiment, a hemp string was used for the main, wet line to conduct electricity, while a silk string was used for the dry part connected to the key for insulation. The hemp was conductive when wet, and the silk kept the flyer safe by being non-conductive when dry.
Key details of the experiment setup include:
- Hemp String: Attached to the kite and soaked in rain, it conducted the electrical charge down from the storm cloud.
- Silk String: Held by Franklin, it provided insulation to prevent him from being shocked.
- Metal Key: Located at the intersection of the hemp (wet) and silk (dry) strings, it acted as the conductor to collect the electricity and charge a Leyden jar.
