Rates are crashing and fuel to the moon!

Diesel use to be the cheapest. But supposedly they had to go up because there was more of a demand for it.

 

Unless spot rates move up quickly, this little spike is going to push some smaller outfits that don’t hedge finally over the edge. Between that and the purge of unqualified drivers we might actually see capacity reductions.

That’s said, I got my doors blown off today doing 73 on I15 by a long nose Pete with a pusher and a maxi trailer. He wasn’t worried about fuel prices even a little.

 

Driver probably wasn’t buying it either

 

Ohh...regular, yes. Gasoline that had tetraethyl lead in it. For a second I was like WTF is that sign talking about. "Regular" for as long as I've been buying gasoline anyway, *is* Unleaded. (87 octane). That sign has to be from like the early-mid 1980's.

Not a bad deal for high test at only 10 cents more. Nowadays the price spread between regular unleaded and Super is pretty ridiculous, especially if it's Ethanol-free high test or "Rec gas" as it's sometimes called.

 

Diesel is higher than gas now because of the refining processes required for the ultra low sulfur fuel.

 

You know, spot market guys who truly work for themselves and can name their price before they agree to haul anything have a little more leverage when fuel prices climb into "bend me over a barrel" territory. It's the guys that haul for fixed contract rates that really get shellacked. A little bit of volatility in fuel prices is tolerated and expected, but once it wanders too far out of the window it turns into a game the carrier plays with the lease-op/owner-op drivers to see how long they can get away with NOT raising the contract rates or throwing in a fuel surcharge before the driver's become furious enough and start parking their trucks or quitting. Then when they do finally throw you a bone, it ain't enough when fuel goes up again the following week. I definitely feel like I'm kind of getting played for a chump right now...everyone else is getting satisfied at my expense at the moment and my choice is either quit or take it.

 

Sounds like you have no idea how to run your business. If doing contract freight you should be getting a fuel surcharge. Why the hell would you agree to running contract freight without fuel surcharge? Just close up your business now so you can let someone who knows how to run a business make money.
