I don't know about diesel, but unleaded gas went to 1.05 in 98 then dropped to .98 in the summer of 99. I got my license in 97 and the sudden "spike in gas prices" caused a huge change in the social scene. Less cruising, more house parties. Then summer of 99 hit and we were running up to Great America and down to the Indiana Dunes at every opportunity because 'gas is cheap'. 4 years later I was working at a car audio shop to suplement my teaching income and a trucker came in to upgrade his stereo. Dude said "once diesel hits $2 a gallon we're going to strike".

Gas was .99 cents when I got my license in 1980. Old Chrysler got 10 mpg. Took home $185 for 60 hrs. @3,35hr. Spent everything on gas, weed and alcohol. Occasional Concert.

    From 95,

When I would mention how much gas use to cost. Drivers would claim that was before my time. But I remember when I was in high school. We would put $10 in the tank. And ride forever it seemed like. In maybe around 04 was when it started getting on up there in price.

Summer and fall of 04, oil was high. First time I paid $500 to fill my tanks. That was roughly $2.50 gal. A year later, It went even higher after Katrina. As high as $5 gal. for diesel. Oil hit $100 barrel.

It's kinda sad that most high school kids nowadays will probably never experience that kind of fun.
I think the first tank of gas I bought was $.88 a gallon. Wasn't long until it hit $1.00 and stayed there.
My oldest and I were just talking about gas prices last week. She's a senior in high school, has a good paying part time job, but it takes almost half her weekly paycheck to fill her car up. She can't wrap her head around a $25 fill up and having an awesome weekend just wasting gas
