Man I did!!! I loved going in for a cup or two of coffee at 2 am. Bring the book, catch it up and have a half a pack of smokes. Come out to all those idling trucks and smell the diesel fumes. Roll the window down on a cold night and take off listening to that motor as I went through the gears.

After ELD many drivers act like every second must be guarded like the crown jewels and absolutely lose their minds if anyone causes any delay. I was like that sometimes. There's also a rapidly declining experience base, more drivers are very new than before, and that is like pouring gas on a fire for most problems on the road and in truck stops.Gearjammin' Penguin, SmallPackage, Toomanybikes and 1 other person Thank this.

Some of them even had telephones at every truck driver table.
I wasn't driving way back then, but I do remember seeing them.Gearjammin' Penguin, tscottme, Numb and 1 other person Thank this. -

And most sit down restaurants at truck stops had one of these.tscottme, Gatordude, Numb and 1 other person Thank this. -
Flying J had a room full of phone booths complete with the folding phone booth door. They ran the pay phones in them. In many restaurants, the calling cards were required. Back in those days, most would only call home once a day.
Early 90s, company issued sky pagers. They would kill the batteries, BUT you could get your dispatch without calling the dispatcher. That cut phone usage in half.
Mid 90s, got the Motorola phone from Cellular One (remember them?) but the cost was $.60/minute, freaking expensive as hell BUT vital for that traveling booty call. The Motorola phone was so stout that it could be used as a weapon.
Before the phone, life could be extremely dangerous at some shippers and receivers. Because of this, when we parked, landing gear was rolled down and 5th wheel released, pants stayed on, gun ready. And we left the CB on. We’d squelch them up to cover just the immediate area, but kept them on just in case we needed help from the trucks parked close by.
Obviously then, we didn’t have anywhere near the dickheadery in the industry because the only person in a position to help in an emergency was that driver parked next to you.
This is probably the primary reason why most of the hands who have been out here think that TMC from the original post was a prick. 30 years ago, there was an unwritten code of conduct. Now, there’s an industry chocked full of EFFEMINATE fat pucks, all in their feelings acting like a bunch of ugly stinky 13 year old girls.
“But Six, you’re shaming!”
You are attractive flies and acting like a b!cth in public. Get rid of the flies and the female act and I won’t have any more ammo.RockinChair, TurkeyCreekJackJohnson, Sons Hero and 5 others Thank this.
