I know nothing on hauling. I don't have a CDL yet. What I do know is that I want a way to survive, and hauling is a good avenue to help me accomplish that.
The more money I can make the happier I am. I am desperate for stability.
That being said, I'm not dumb enough to go into anything blind. So if anyone is willing, these are my questions.
What are the different types of hauling?
Which one generally makes the most money?
Where can I learn the lingo? Because even the pay language that is used is foreign to me.
What are negotiation tactics you recommend?
Company schools? I'm poverty with two AAS so Pell grants won't save me now. (in Healthcare, but both are pretty well useless now and getting phased out by AI) Which one do you recommend in your personal experience?
Thank you for any answers.

Where is your location? State or Zip Code or nearest town/city.
Are you in a situation to move or pretty much stuck there? -
Eastern Kentucky. I am very able to move.Chinatown Thanks this.

Eastern Kentucky is OK for trucking jobs for new drivers.
Income tax free states are even better, so you can keep more of your income.Last edited: Mar 25, 2026 at 12:33 AM

Are you able to do heavy work, such as in flatbeds, lifting 50 - 80 lb. tarps and chains?
Refrigerated trucking is ok also, to get the career started. I liked it enough to do refrigerated for 18 years running coast-to-coast.
You can attend a private cdl school or a trucking company cdl school.
After 12 - 24 mos experience, can move on to the higher paying jobs, such as tankers.nextgentrucker and CatAstronautCrew Thank this. -
Can get an early jump on tankers with Schneider. The tanker division is the only division I recommend because the pay is too low in the other divisions.
Schneider will pay for cdl school and tanker school.
A new cdl school grad in Louisville just was hired for Schneider Tanker.

Get started on the endorsements that will be attached to your cdl when you graduate from school.
Endorsements mean more money.
CDL Genie and a couple others are phone & computer apps to study for the endorsements.
Also, on here is a study guide with general knowledge for new drivers, plus all the endorsements:
