Should have been there in 53/54. Leland to Greenville; US 82 2 lane turned into 4 lane? Simple. Just drop off the westbound edge with a motor grader in Leland to start; then a dozer to follow and root down solid. Then take about 30 F600 Fords and log trailers with blacksmithed wooden beds. Haul that red dirt from the hills near Carrolton down and dump. Log trailers had no brakes at all and the F600's were vacuum booster..
Bunch of young local talent to big to pick cotton as drivers and they were not afraid to get it out of the Fords... Ferguson Bros in G'Wood had the dirt contract and it was like a crawling line of red ants from Valley hill to MS1 in Greenville. Little trucks were red and after a few loads, the rest of it was. No flagging, stakes in the joints of the concrete sections on 82 and say 2 feet straight down till filled with dirt. You centered your side tween the stakes showing drop off and the original center line of 82. Got that side added, just switched over and did the eastbound side, same way.
Then had 4 lanes together with a wider center stripe.
Mississippi Power and Light actually moved the hi voltage feed; on the west side of it, back the necessary distance live. Backed a winch truck up to a pole, lash the boom to the pole at bed level and top lift it nearly clear, drag to new holes. Did these like three position sectionals to allow slack. Make a move; shift over, and get the next.
Wasn't a bad slot to drive except when tained. Then slick red muddy pavement ....

I sure miss that thunder in up 55 then blow through the trees on 27or28 I’m getting old lol. Hit 61 at Vicksburg run 61 to 438 at Arcola. Take 438 to 1 then 454 to 65. Miss all the coops that way. That ol Greenville coop at the foot of that bridge that ol ####### would watch us come out on 65…..we’d just high tail over dat rickety ### old bridge. We was just kids having a good time. Woulda never believed he could a chased our sorry ##### over the bridge and brought us back. Coming outta Laurel and Lucedale back when both them places had barns that were jumping. Pulling 48 and 50 ft spring rides and thought cow duke couldn’t stink.

You hadda be on your toes between 55 and where you crossed 20 you hadda switch there and you missed that left turn you was gonna hate life a hot minute.

Run lots a 49 to 12 at Belzona to 61 and come out at the tire store and turn right. Can’t remember the name of that town either to save my life…..Hollandale Mississippi I promise I didn’t look

You don't go back far enough to know but the scales for Vicksburg used to be on the land side of US 61; going south right thru Vicksburg, you could look out your pass window down on the river as you came close to the bridge. It was on a big vacant like lot you stopped , traffic cleared and you turned in and looped the back side and came out over his scale pad. Got back in traffic and on about you rat killin.
Coming off the old bridge was a sign saying all truck go on up there.
Running some embargoed cement out of Jackson to Dallas when housing was going up on Loop 12. Billed a 5-10-5 going to Tallulah Gin Co.....
Drag along till a few ahead of you and one sitting headed north, block the vision of a clear shot seeing you, just slide on by and gain the middle of
    the bridge.....

So headed up 49 I can’t remember the name of the place it’s in the middle of the road it’s a park. Something in me has always said that’s an old coop from a different time but I have no idea really. I know @High Stepper knows the place I’m talking about

I never knew Jews drove a truck. I figured they were all in banking, lawyering or Hollywood. He must be the black sheep of the family

You're talking about the Indian mounds. That's not far from the catfish restaurant you stopped at that time in Pocahontas.

And it is Hollandale you remember. I cover it sometimes. When farming season starts we go there almost every day. We cover Arcola, and just south of Cleveland up 61.

@JolliRoger this restaurant is in Indianola.
