I'd be cool with an 800 or 900 idle if it would just keep doing it and if that would keep it from sooting up.

You can put a rock on the throttle and run it at high idle, if it is not moving it will shut down. If you have optimized idle, in a company truck even an older truck that was company it will have a password and be protected. Also if you idle it a lot, when the company downloads is the percentage of Idle will come up. and if it is above normal you will be gone. Just a thought!

Nope. Just being realistic. If you tamper with the companies truck without authorization, they WILL fire your ##### on the spot. That goes for everything from as simple as hard wiring electronic gadgets to the truck electrical system (instead of just plugging your accessories into the 12V outlets) to something as complex as altering the computer settings to allow idling or turning up the governed speed. Companies were firing drivers for doing those things back when they had more trucks than people to drive them. You are a fool if you think they wouldn't fire you now, when there are more drivers than trucks needing to be driven.

Fuel is expensive, and profit margins are slim. If your boss isn't making a profit based upon the work you do, you won't have a job for very long. It is in your best interest to do your job as efficiently as you can...which means not idling the truck any longer than absolutely necessary.

I hate idling trucks unless it is absolutly needed. Lastnight was a real nice night for sleeping. It did not get any colder the 50 degrees outside yet some idiot had to idle his truck all night next to me. I parked way in the back away from any trucks and this idiot came and parked next to me even though there were many many spots for him to park. I was about ready to cut his fuel line then move.

Now I'm finding I don't hate opti-idle except where it stays hot all night.
This dang truck started and stopped all night. I did not get a great night of sleep.
I asked in the company shop if it could be disabled. they say even if you disable opt the truck will still die after some time.
I think it might get down to 70 something where I'm at now, so about 1 am it may stop altogether.

I sure like what it sounds like when I walk by a truck with a thermoking tri-pac APU running!:biggrin_25514:

I cornered the foreman in the main company yard. I said why can't my truck idle. He says "fuel economy". I said a truck running 1100 rpm about 2/3s of the time uses less fuel than 550 idle?

He backpedaled and said it will kill the turbo if it idles.

    What say yee?

Inside the left headlight is a small black switch with 2 wires on it. If a wire on that breaks no more opti idle.....

Edit forgot to add-That switch is for the hood position. If the hood is open the the opt idle does not work. So if a wire on it breaks then...you get the idea

Fast idle won't hurt the turbo, slow idle will take the bearing out and cause more oil usage from leaking past the seals. That works the same on a Mercedes, especially the oil usage.

We had some fleet trucks with 12.7s, and a few didn't have fast idle available, those were the ones that took out the turbo. The one I used to drive, despite having a blue cloud from blowby around the front of the tractor, still had the original turbo when it finally got sold, it was the only one of 5 that made it that far.
