It is so early stage and I posted it with more excitement than any knowledge because I have zero!
We intend to keep the same company running that has been the last 3.5 years as its made its way through the court system.
Now that we can legally communicate I really was just looking for ideas from those of you who drive....as to what would be a meaningul way for us to introduce ourselves.
I can appreciate all the critics but we have 6 amazing humans who built a relationship with my Dads father and they chose to stay the last 3.5 years....I just wanted to be thoughtful in how we approach this and thought this was a good forum to seek advice!
Thanks again.....

I drove for a family owned private company for almost 25 years. There were many great things about it because back in those days the culture was a big family and it was always said by the owner and his vp’s that “we all work together and get rich.” It wasn’t a feeling of you work for me and i get rich. The owner even if he hadn’t seen you in years always knew you and or wife’s name and always greeted you with “ how long have we been working together?” Upper tier class at it’s finest. He passed away and all that stopped. The step son was a ghost. Don’t do that.

THIS is exactly why I made my post!
Thank You
The fact that these 6 humans have stuck by this company for 3.5 years as its played out in court says everything about the relationship that they had with my husbands father.
And this is exactly why I posted...we may be having the same company manage the day to day but we are 110% want them to know how appreciated they are.
What you described is exactly how I know my husbands father was. He wanted to know about their lives...support their grandkids school fundraiser...that kind of a "family"
I want to carry that on but want to thoughtfully get to know them!
I only posted so I can approach this with points of view like yours...someone who knows best!
THANK YOU for your kind and thoughtful reply...it is appreciated! -
Outside broker? Do you mean a transportation broker? So they are brokering loads to "your" company and running it? Seems pretty ripe for double dipping on the freight.Sons Hero, bullhaulerswife and Trucker6502 Thank this.

You may should let things ride for awhile. That's if current mgmt is turning a profit etc. Do you get a check monthly from said mgmt? Or is it just "breaking even" ? Sometimes employees get scared when new owners come on board and scamper. Obviously, hasn't happened here. Just how long have these employees been on board? Is the business doing mostly dedicated accounts ? In that case, it kinda' runs itself. Nobody has to go looking for loads. Since you say hubby was/is involved in the business, you stay away for awhile, let him communicate. Just my opinion.
bullhaulerswife and Trucker6502 Thank this. -
Thank You for this kind and thoughtful reply.
This is exactly the sort of solid advice I was seeking and is very insightful and helpful.
I honestly don't know what kind of a profit it turns...I know that it does indeed make one and as you said it does have dedicated accounts that essentially "run themselves"
Thanks for your opinion that " doing nothing" may be the best, most effective and best way to go right now.
Thank You!!! -
Yeah, obviously the hired help is aware of fathers death and company has been running successfully while courts sort things out. And getting paid etc. Which is important. Just be aware any employee can ask for/sue for "unpaid" monies owed. Which could be true or not. Just hold back, stay in the shadows for awhile. You want the co. to continue to operate (successfully) Luck to ya'
Trucker6502 Thanks this. -
You state you don’t know what kind of profit it makes? For me, that is a huge RED FLAG!! I realize is has only been a short amount of time since everything on your Father-in-Law side has been completed, but this company/brokerage should have scheduled a meeting with your husband(and you) the day after they were notified of that completion. This Company/Brokerage not longer works for the Court, no longer works for the Probate process, no longer is a ‘blind trust caretaker’, they work for your Husband and You.
You need to know, from this point forward what the hard cold numbers are.
What % of the gross receipts is this company keeping for itself? What % of the receipts is to be allocated to You and your Husband? This is now your Company, your side of this equation is entitled to a % of the earnings of this company. I’m sure your late Father-in-Law would have insisted on it. -
This is important for the OP to read. Stop focusing on the opening line and read the rest. All the other suggestions are good but many don't employ drivers or I don't think they do.
Congrats, you have a nightmare in the works.
here is what you really need to do;
first you need to get your crap together and figure out how to manage it or find someone who YOU CAN TRUST to run it for you and you have to still be involved. YOU CAN NOT MANAGE IT FROM A DISTANCE, IT IS A DAILY THING.
Learn your drivers, go to them, arrange for a good dinner and meeting, don’t be cheap.
You need to spend day or two, AT THE MINIMUM, meeting, learning who they are, what their concerns are, and letting them know you actually will not be an arm chair owner.
don’t take sides when it comes to issues, don’t make promises and don’t act like they are not important because this is how they feed their families.
There is a hell of a lot of red flags, but I didn't say much about them. I assume the OP has a lawyer other than the probate lawye, who will look at EVERYTHING from contracts to employment records to make sure these two don't lose their **** with a legal problem. I also assumed they have a good accountant outside of the probate case that can look at the books and make sure they are straight or are seeing money funneled off illegally.Gearjammin' Penguin, Speedy356 and Trucker6502 Thank this. -
Thank You for sharing all of this...we definitely have a lot to figure out and I appreciate all that you brought up.
